Automatic Transmission Strength
Automatic Transmission Strength
I know that there are only a couple guys out there rocking that turbo automatics. But in general those who have had your ralliarts for a while how well do you think the tranny is built?
I'm going to be installing the RRM stage 2 cam, as well as boosting to 8psi here in the next couple months. That, I know, will not be putting to much stress on the tranny.
But, once my tune is running solid, i'm going to be investing in some Manley rods, wiseco pistons, and hopefully some of the +1mm valves that Toortool has helped develop.
Get that installing and crank the boost to 15 psi. Do you think the tranny will handle it? Automatics are generally pretty reliable as not pushed to extreme limits but how extreme is extreme for us?
Thank you ahead of time for all (hopefully helpful) replies!

It's hard to say, nobody has pushed it that far that I'm aware of. You might have to do some research and find out if there are any options that the DSM guys have for their auto trans, and see if any of it can be made to work for you. I'm honestly not well versed in automatics, but I imagine the big concern will be whether the bands can hold the power and how well the torque converter can transfer the power without frying.
the most i have pushed is 12 psi stock tranny with a cooler and stock engine but i just did it only a week...i was really scare about engine damage...without pistons and rods i'm not going to risk my engine...but at least the tranny was behaving the same...honestly is hard to tell....i'm running 10 psi daily driving for a year and a half now without tranny issues
I've hit ~15 psi (Accidentally...) with my auto turbo, other than that 8.7 psi daily for 1/2 a year without troubles. Will be ~9.5 within weeks. Get a tranny cooler at the very minimum. I'm thinking about sending my transmission out to be built. Boost through shifts is sweet with an auto. I'd also avoid launching the car from a stand still as much as possible (save it for the track), as I wouldn't be surprised if that would lead to damage quickly.
I'd be worried for the torque converter and other components in an automatic boosting 15psi regularly.. not saying it can't be done at all but I think you'd be in trouble much quicker than most turbo autos.
The way I see it is boosting an auto is a process. You'll be boosting 15psi so you're upgrading your engine internals to handle the load, and by looking around at the average auto boost even in this thread I think you should consider doing something similar with the transmission and not let it sit without any aid (coolers or finding a shift kit etc)
OR you could just try it and tell us how it goes for you haha

after being at the track i think i will go tranny modding first...honestly +200 HP is enough to hit 13 seconds with good tranny buildup...but without any tranny modding its hard to hit the 13sec line....that's what i think based on my experience driving @ track...
****i have only being at the track twice in my life....
