clutch/transmission problem..
clutch/transmission problem..
I have a 04 Ralliart with 137,000 miles on it. I bought the car in Aug 2010 with no problems at all. I started hearing a noise while driving a month ago and decided to see if it stopped..which it didn't. So yesterday I took it to a local shop who said "sound appears to be coming from the throw out bearing which will require a clutch kit replacement. However there also appears to be some noise coming from the differential part of the transmission. This may be coming from a possible damaged input shaft bearing or reverse idler gear which there is a tab for. Brake pads and rotors are suggested." I don't know much about cars but I'm assuming if I were to buy a clutch and have them put it on it'd be less expensive. Any suggestions on which one I should get? The only upgrades my car has is a cold air intake (injen) and lowered. I don't race but I love fast cars. Also, if something is wrong with the transmission-any idea on how much it could cost to fix? The only info I know is they charge by the hour to figure out what's wrong and then I have to go from there. But I've never had trouble with my transmission in any of the other cars I've had. Any advice would be great!!
Listen close and see if the noise goes away when you push in the clutch. If it does then you need a new throwout bearing. My throwout bearing has been making noise for years. If the noise is still present when you push in the clutch then it may be something else.

Its kinda up to you. A throwout bearing is fairly cheap. Its all the labor of dropping the tranny thats going to cost you. You might be able to get away with just doing that an your clutch will be fine. If the clutch starts to slip then you gotta spend the money to drop it again an pay for a clutch..
i have the same problem on my lancer, My fault tho i launch and doble clutch that car, poor tranny.
If the sound go away when you push the clutch it might be your imput bearing shaft. Do you have any tranny fluid leaks.

What other sounds are there in the car besides the tranny one? You mentioned the brakes but are you sure thats it? You could probably get away w/ getting your rotors resurfaced if there's still a good amount of life on them and just replace the pads (which is really easy).

So far no tranny fluid leaks, at least that I know of. And yea the mechanic said the same thing about what was probably causing the sound. I just hope its not to expensive..
The brakes were because my rotors are rusty(in the holes-they are drilled and blotted-I don't know if that's what originally came on the car or not. I bought it the way it is). And they also have grooves in them but I don't know how bad is too bad and they need replacing. My brakes were bad all around but I just bought new hawk pads (in a blue box I can't remember the name) and put them on the front because it was getting pretty bad breaking wise. But didn't put them on the back in case I do need to replace the rotors.
Any clue on which clutch kit I should get? I don't know anything about the different stages.
And if that is what is wrong with the transmission any idea on how much that part costs aside from labor..bc I assume labor alone is a ton.
Thanks for the help btw!
