I understand the noob desire for inexpensive upgrade, it almost makes it no fun that mitsubishi already installed the goods on the factory line. NGK iridiums, coil on plug ignition ect.

So maybe a thread on free or cheap starter projects might be fun. It'd be a good sticky. I myself am a new RA owner and have found myself in the same boat while surfing this site, thinking about plugs and wires and those usual cheap projects.

So how bout it people, should the moderators fire up a sticky thread like that?

So is there any replacement for the ignition wires on the RA ??? Your talking about irridiums is nice and all but the NGK Type R's I believe are way better. Nology and skunk2 has nothing for the new RA any other company anyone has used?

what? ignition wires? are you talking coils or the control harness?

NGK laser iridium are the OEM plugs, and the NGK part number is specified in ASA, and possible the manual. They are pre-gapped at 32 thou from the factory...you can throw any cheapo plugs in there and it will run, but most cheapo plugs are gapped at like 38-44 thousandths, and won't last as long...it's not a huge issue for normal operation, but it does obviously make a difference, and i see no reason to deviate from the manufacturer suggested plug, unless cost is an issue...there's probably a wide range of plugs that will fit/work...but the engine was designed and tuned to use a specific type...

Question

How long before you need to change the coils/wires if ever? I change my plugs every 60,000. FYI: Best ones are the OEM NGK Laser Iridium plugs for anyone wanting to know. part # NGK 3656

"Scheduled maintenance service for emission control and proper vehicle performance":
Replace plugs at 105,000 miles, ignition cables every 5 years or 60,000 miles
