What is the Ballast For?

seearched... couldn't find... so hope someone can answer / direct me to the right place

yeh im a noob but... wut are the ballasts for HIDs for?
and wut is the max a bulb can get without using ballast? 6000K?

it powers the bulbs...you cant get true HID's without the ballasts...cus then it wont be HID's they woud just be bulbs

no ballast = no need for bulbs since no ballast = no hid

if you dont have the ballast your not gonna have hid so you can only get the hid look alike
bulbs that you can buy at pep boys orileys or whatever auto parts store you go to
hell ebay even has them
is that what you mean?

the ballasts raise the voltage for the bulbs to operate I believe. HID's require significant voltage to begin discharge. Like they said above, no ballats equal worthless HID bulbs.

alright thanks... so the ones on ebay like mtec bulbs and wut so ever with the 4000K bulbs need a ballast? or just imitation?

If it's under $100, it's a regular halogen bulb, and does not need a ballast.

Ballast is an electrician's term for a transformer. What was interesting from the how stuff works website is that HID's don't like being "blinked", which I always wondered why the Evo didn't have an easy way to just flash the headlights to let people know they were okay to get in your lane. It's to save the bulb.
