Something sounds loose inside this part of my exhaust which looks like a little basket..does anyone know what its called and what could be wrong... it sounds like a filter screen of some sort of and makes my exhaust sound like crap...

How can I fix it ?

That sounds like the flex section of the down pipe from what you're explaining...
I don't see how something could've gotten stuck in there, but...

Anyway what you could do is take out the O2 sensor and unbolt the DP and just try & shake it out?!?!?! Because that's all one piece... So if you want to get to the flex section the whole thing has to come off!!!

 

Hard to tell in the pic, but that looks like a heat shield around your cat. Might have got a small rock in it, or one of the tiny welds they hold it on with has come loose.

 

ya, looks like you circled the front of the cat or the downpipe. the flexpipe is a bit further up. there is a shield just before the cat. not uncommong for rocks to get stuck in there. also, make sure the bolts/nuts on the cat are tight. if they are loose, they may rattle until they fall out!

ahahahah finally someone has the same problem as me, yeah bro its the downpipe, it sounds like theres something rattling in it. iv gotten a new down pipe underwarrenty from mitsh and 2 days later i had the same problem. best bet is 2 just get a new downpipe from rrm , because if u get a rrm downpipe , it will eliminate
that part thats all f'd up.

 

LOL - yeah... I wasnt able to take a pic of my own... so I used yours... I hope you dont mind... it was the only pic I could find that showed a bit of the undercarriage......

But anyways.... it is the flex pipe.. and when I hit it with my hand it sounds like something metal is inside of it.... and I turn my car on and give it gas it sounds like the metal is vibrating.. very high pitch sound..

I tried to take the part out but wasnt sure if I had to take the entire downpipe off, so I decided to get some input from you guys before I did something wrong... which Im glad I did.

 

spOrk - I was hoping I could fix it myself.... I have a megan exhaust, will the dealer void my warranty to get the new downpipe?

 

While they probably wouldn't void your whole warranty, I doubt they'd replace your downpipe for free if you've modified the exhaust at all. If you kept your stock catback...

 

Well, at the very least - I'll make the attempt to take it off and inspect it myself... if there is no way of fixing it .. then yeah RRM Downpipe here a come... I dont like the idea of the CEL coming on.. that happend with my VR6 and it wasnt a good feeling driving around with it on all the time...

 

the sound might be the 'fibers' in the flexpipe itself. it is just woven steel, after all. since its made to 'flex' the vibrarion might be making it rattle against itself. a new flexpipe will run you about $30 + install if you know where to find them. its a cheaper alternative than the $300 downpipe, but a bit of a hassle.

but if i were you, i would just unbold the downpipe and give it a good shake first =) i would be suprised if something is cought up in there, but i could see it getting cought where the pipe kinds under the axle.

 

well when i went to mitshi they gave me a brand new downpipe under warrenty
800$ but before i took it in , i took off my rrm axle back exhuast cause i just knew they would blame it on the exhuast. best bet is to take off your catback exaust and take your car it . but your just going to waste your time cause they will replace it and it will happen again trust me. there another guy with a ra here that had the same problem . best bet is 2 get a rrm downpipe with resinator and get that cell fix. talk to retro about the cell fix.

 

dayummm - something is always happening with my rides... but I guess I'll have to suck it up and fix the damn thing. Thank you all for the feedback.
