Question What is power shifting?

Just wondering what power shifting is, how you do it and when you would want to?

Somebody help me on this...

holding the gas in, shifting... "the revvs jump the powerband" than release the clutch, than the revvs fall back down, but the car is pushed alil foward, like a "jump".

My understanding of power shifting is shifting really fast without using the clutch. Very bad for your transmission, not recommended.

i know on my bike power shifting is easy and most experienced riders do so... it's a matter of accelerating modulating the accelerator(slightly letting up) and applying pressure to the shifter...NO CLUTCH. It's not bad for bikes, but i hear it is bad for cars. I can do it in the evo but i can't get it to go in until the rpm's drop too much.

otter u can shift without your cluthc is done correctly, takes alot of knowing when to shift and timing... if u want to see what i mean go to an emtpy parking lot shift into first normall and dont hit the gas to much. have your rpm's raise slowly and put pressure on the shifter towards second gear, then aroudn 3k it will slid out easily and if done correctly will beable to go into second with no problem, if u have a hard time staying at 3k in 1st do it in second, it just takes alot of pratices, but i dont believe that is considered power shifting, but you can do this since are tranny are synchonized (sp?)

EDIT: i've only been able to get this to work around 3k, i can usualy shift from 2nd to 5th without a clutch when i feel lazy... but yea...

Yea power shifting is what is mentioned as just not letting off the gas and shifting you get that lil jump and burn a whole lota clutch really not worth it but to each his own and shifting with out clutch if you can get it down right wont hurt to much but if not prepare for a lot of grinding sounds

i'm know the answer is in the thread, but power shifting is when you continue to apply pressure on the gas, generally done only when racing or drag racing, slamming on the clutch and slamming the shifter into the next gear pretty much at the same time, and then releasing the clutch immediately after the gear goes in. this worked great in my 94 civic si, but i'm not gonna attempt this at all with my evo.

the shifter will generally slide out of gear without the clutch being depressed. the timing is pretty crucial as the clutch needs to be fully engaged when you enter the next gear. this worked great for me as this keeps the rpms up, but the mistake of not having the clutch engaged tends to give my gears an outstanding grind session.

What lancer chick is talking about is our cars sweet spot for shifting where it will just fall into gear without depressing the clutch is right about cam change over just above 3500 3700 or so...... that is the smoothest shifting point in our car at any gear..... as for power shifting if it doesn't involve the clutch at all........ well that doesn't sound good for my car..... rather then do that.... just get the rrm piggy and it'll make your rpms not drop as fast so it's easier to stay in our power band while shifting....... I noticed that if i take it to about 6k and just feather the clutch and throw it into the next gear with the piggy it only drops to 4k which is great.... before it would fall all the way to 3k almost just out of the cam change.

an old friend's father could shift without the clutch all day long. would drive us around with his clutchfoot out the window like an old hick showoff!

but yea, dont powershift unless ur racing. if you wana practice, try shifting without letting the foot off the gas when the peddal isnt all the down. IE: push the gas about 50-75% then try it. the RPM's wont spike as much. You gotta shift first and have good foot/hand coordination or ull miss the gear. if done right and u dont just jump into it, it shouldnt hurt any more than slightly reduced clitch life. be safe and enjoy!

Power shifting is for racing (drag racing more than anything). You shouldn't hurt anything if you want to try it once or twice, but don't make it a habit unless you want to replace your clutch or worse.

powershifting is shifting gears without using the clutch (at all)
