valve chattering?

just got my car 30,000 mile serviced... i wanted them to check the valves (they chatter a little) the dealer said the valves do make a little noise at idle but its not an issue and wont effect the performance of the engine.... is this true or are they just giving me the runaround?

if they sound louder than before and you do a bit of hard driving, you might want to report the problem in a whole new job order. It affects somewhat, depends on how you drive the car. If its hard all the time like me, you may want to learn how to do it yourself, so you dont have to run to the dealership every time. I do my own checks and only once they came out of adjustment, and that was when I overrevved the engine with a 3rd gear at redline to 2nd gear misshift while running against a 350z, they came out off from adjustment by a very little measurement, and it did hell to me. After that adjustment I gave it( I over adjusted BTW) it runs real fine

So how did your race come out? And please explain your adjustment steps. I am very interested.

Also the MIVEC adjustment is a standard part of a 30k mile maintaince. If the dealer did not adjust them then they need to do it.

i dont know if im thinkin of the same noise or not, but when my car is idling once it is warm it sounds pretty loud to, almost like a chattering, but it wasnt a really bad sound so i didnt really worry about it to much. Should i worry?

I think what he means is he adjusted hs own valve clearances to be a little tighter than spec. I did, as well. There was less noise, but I can't say that I felt a difference from .04mm.

When I did mine tighter that factory spec, the difference was barely noticable. The easiest thing to notice was that my idle was a hair more rough.

Improves lift a bit but not my much, and yes makes idle a little bit rougher, you cant really feel it, but it helps top end some, at leas to me it did

As for the race with the 350z... It was a convertible, He downshifted beside me I downshifted back from 5th to third, Pulled about three quartes of a car on it. When I speedshifted 4th...guess it wasnt really 4th gear, it was second gear. To this day the car hadnt a problem, so I guess the Engine takes it like a champ as wants some more. It DID go back to safe mode since the CEL light came on. Check timing, the belt, everything was fine.. Thank God
