Engine Knock?

Hello Everyone

For the last couple of months I have been hearing this pretty bad knock coming from my engine/Tranny. I took it into Mitsubishi and they informed me that these sounds are normal.

Now the ticking sound im not worried about, I know thats normal. Its the just valves and intake. It's the loud chatter in the backround I am worried about. It's very noticeable once I open the hood in the video.

Now after reading multiple threads on weird engine sounds, and multiple people are indicating its the SST tranny chattering. However I have not seen a video posted to compare the sounds.

I took a video for everyone to listen to. I would love your guys input on this.

Thank you!

yeah, that doesn't sound normal.

i don't know what the sound was but a guy here locally had some work done to his car. and a brass bushing (coupler) as you'd put it went out as a part of the sst tranny. causing a rattle. does it get louder and worse under acceleration? or go inop?

I cant tell if it gets louder under acceleration. The Engine/Exhaust is to loud.. The issue is intermittent and I have not noticed a performance loss.

Yesterday when i started my car it happened, but after i drove ~50 km's parked it and started it, the sound would repeat itself.

its defiantly not right. sounds like something came loose somewhere down the line. probably have to get a long screw driver and treat it like a stethoscope to help pin point the suggested area.

It does sound like the clutch plates chattering, but it is a lot louder than mine. It could because you are in a parking garage.

I have all of the same sounds on my car, though the sound you're concerned about sounds a bit louder in the video than I've experienced on my car.

Thank you everyone for your inputs. It is in fact a normal sound - If anything does happen to the tranny I will notify everyone. Dealer indicated they have everything noted.

@RazorLab - No need to get frustrated. I hope you can understand this sound got me worried because I have had so many other issues with this car. There has already been over $10,000 of warranty repairs on my car from multiple issues. Mitsu tech bricked my ECU when I purchased the car, replaced two AWD pumps, and replaced a rear diff.

@Moderators Please do sticky one of these topics to inform everyone of the SST's clutch chatter. Thanks

I totally understand. If it was stickied it would be easier for people like you to find the information and be more assured.

@razorlab - I have done dozens of road tests and confirmed it is the SST Tranny. Sound is gone as soon as I put into drive / let go off the brake and the tranny engages.

I do have one question that no "Mitsu tech" can answer. Why do the clutches chatter like that? Has a spacer been slightly compressed causing the clutches to cause that chatter noise?

Yes and if you would have searched you would have found that exact information.

The sound you're hearing is the clutches moving around freely because they're disengaged. Once you clamp the clutches (put the car into gear) they stop moving. However, you might still hear some chattering even when you're in gear, as in any given gear you've only engaged one of your clutches. The other one remains disengaged and continues to chatter.
