05 Lancer Ralliart Idle problems

So, first time posting on here!

I spent a fair amount googling trying to find someone with my issue but didn't see anything that matched my issue that closely.

I will try and give as much information as I can about the issue.

I have an 05 Lancer Ralliart with 65,000 miles on it. A while back I had the cap on my air filter get sucked into what I believe is my car's throttle control. Why a cap on the air filter was placed on the inside on an air filter seems to be the worst design idea I have ever heard of but that isn't the issue. I took the cap out fine and there didn't seem to be any damage to the systems there. The main problem is that since this happened my car doesn't idle at a consistent RPM anymore. If I have AC on the RPM will jump around and eventually stall. During the colder months I haven't needed AC so I didn't really have too many problems dealing with this but now that it is summer I figure I should get it solved.

I am definitely a noob when it comes to cars so please respond with that in mind lol.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Cap on your air filter? I honestly have no idea what you're talking about Do you have a picture of it and where it came from?

Cant find an exact image of the air filter but something close to the top left one

There was a metal cap that was glued to the inside of the air filter. The glue that held it on melted in the florida heat and got sucked into the throttle control. The cap got removed fine and everything looked to be fine.

The issue is no longer with the air filter, I think something else got messed up which is causing the idling problems.

Is it possible that the cap hit the MAF as it got sucked in? You may need to drop the money on a new one.

you don't need to upgrade your fuel pump unless you have bigger injectors, and are using some kind of forced induction.

You would need to give us details other than "idle problems" and "my friend said"...any codes? I believe it is true that if it was fuel pump related that the ECU would not throw a code, but what exactly are the symptoms?

aight heres the deal when i start my car.. the car turns on no problems idles just fine but as soon as i put it in gear and move when i get of the gas the RPM would drop below 500 and sometimes even stalls out... i have had the service light come on and put the computer on and the code i have gotton is a throddle body sensor but at the moment the code has not come up yet..... i mean i have seen previous threads about the throdle body and that it might be a recall but i would have to go to the dealer for that.

I am going to hijack this thread a little bit because I have been having similar problems.

06 Ralliart, 134,000km, stock.

The car starts fine, but sometimes the RPMs go to 1500, and other times they go to 500 and usually stalls out. Once the car is started I can drive normally, but if I put in the clutch and let the RPMs fall to idle, it will usually stall out, sometimes just dropping to 300-500 and staying in that range.
Now this all changes if I have the AC on. With the AC on the RPMs bounce between 800 and 2500 if left to idle. When driving, I can let the RPMs drop, and it will rarely stall out in the same manner as if it would without the AC on.

My car is going to my mechanics on Tuesday, so I am going to try cleaning my MAF this weekend, and see if that help.

If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears (eyes?).

I will update with any solutions I have when I have them.

*edit* I had a check engine light come on once after stalling, and the car went into limp mode where I couldn't go above 2000RPM, but I had to reset the ECU before I could read the code. I am making sure I have my code reader with me until I ave fixed this issue!

Ok several things can cause a variation in idle. The most common is "unmetered" air leak. Meaning an air leak behind and/or around the MAF. What causes the variation in idle from air leaks is that the O2 sensor notices its going lean because the MAF did read the extra air coming in so the ECU compensates to richen up and it keeps going back and forth. Another issue has been APP sensor issues communicating with the TPS. Not very common but possible. Also a defective MAF can cause this. If theres codes I can help you in the right direction if you need it. Hope this helps everyone. There is alot of other things that can cause idle variations but i wont get into those unless you ask.
