Well, cause it is. You made your point, he should get a used car. "Common sense" yes of course it is, because your way is the only way and thats it right? That's the only way to be successful is to buy used first car. For millionth time already, fine your way works. So does mine, and so does others. Buying a relatively quick first car does not mean your doomed, you'll never get to school etc. Once again, im not discrediting you or Amby, YOUR WAY WORKS, SO DO OTHERS. Geez.

This whole point on it being too much car is also lost on me. It's not like it's a Corvette or something. Quick?Yes. But if the person driving is gonna drive like an *** and be unsafe, he's gonna drive like an *** regardless of what he is driving. Is it slightly easier in this car then say a Honda Fit? Yes, but the difference between this and say a GTS is not THAT large. For example I can handle this now, but i would NOT be able to handle a Viper or some other extravagant car, an Evo? yeah probably could. Not to mention who knows how he drives, you both assume he's a "prototypical teenager adding to the statistics". All in all Madcow's suggestion has been the most resounding one, take an advanced driving class, you don't need to be a track racer to learn more about driving to improve. It's the best "mod" you can get, and it transfers from car to car.

maintenence costs big wooptie doo. Oil changes every three thousand miles and tire rotations. If something breaks down within the first five years it is covered under warrenty so why are you bringing these things up it is irrelevant to what info the kid wants.
Money is an issue. He's 18, he's not a brain surgeon or a highly-respected lawyer, while money may not be a concern at the moment, it's not exactly raining from the sky. Buying expensive things when you're young, especially something like a car, isn't a wise decision.
What happens when gas goes back up? Sure it's cheap now but what happens when it goes back up? How will a student afford 2.00$ a liter fuel? You're also suggesting he mod the car which makes the warranty go bye bye.

Opinions are important, hence why people ask for advice. There can be good advice, and there can be bad advice. Am I missing something here?
What makes this all the better is that the "facts" support our advice, not theirs. According to the "facts", fast cars and young males don't mix but they apparently want to ignore the facts and the opinions and just live in their dream world where the Ralliart is the best car ever and can take on Corvettes .

What facts are you referring to? I would like to see the facts and their source that it's only fast cars that cause younger people to get into accidents. Pretty sure they do that in ANY kind of car. But of course your advice is the only advice, your way is the only way and damn any other way. RA is good car, no way it matches up to a corvette unless the RA is modded and the corvette is bone stock, other than that no chance. In any event however that is not pertinent information to this thread, I don't care who brought it up.

Here is the fundamental issue, the RA, like the WRX and like the EVO and STI, is AWD and has a very very high "comfort" factor. What I mean by that is it's a car that makes everyone feel invincible. If you've ever taken the car to the track, you know exactly what I mean. I never spun out, never even had an off-track excursion even when I did things that I knew were stupid, like entering a corner too fast, braking too late, getting on the gas too soon, etc. The cars can take a lot of abuse before they bite back. At first this sounds like a good thing, a car that you can beat up and won't get angry, perfect for a new driver. However, this is where the risk lies. You can push the car really far but when it does let go, it goes. Because of how forgiving the car is, this happens at a very high speed. To further understand this, look at the crashes Evos are involved in on this forum. They aren't minor fender benders, they aren't spins at 30 MPH or 5 MPH over the limit, they're total wrecks and spins at 60 MPH. Moreover, you have people boasting about how fast the car is (even going so far as to say it competes with the Corvette ) yet two seconds later they want to downplay the performance factor. You cannot have it both ways and I find it a bit ridiculous that you aren't going after the people who are massively overhyping the car. Starting with a slower car is good for a variety of reasons, not just one.

Wortless 16 pages I've seen my whole life...

Why dont you go and test drive as many cars as you want/can afford, then come out with your own conclusion?

You're asking if a Mitsubishi car is a good choice, at no less than a Mitsubishi Fansite. It's like going to a dealer and asking the salesman if the car in the showroom is the best car there is for you with zero knowledge on the machine... 99% of them salesman will have one single answer for you .... "Yes"

Done with this thread... bring up the next!

You're free to look it up yourself, I've done it many times on here.

A nice set of quotes from the above article
Crashes are more common among young drivers than any other age group. In the United States, 1 in 4 crash fatalities involve someone 16 to 24 years old, nearly twice as high as other age groups.
The fatality rate for drivers ages 16 to 19, based on miles driven, is four times higher than for drivers ages 25 to 69.

It doesn't matter how "slow" the car is. I drove faster on average in my RSX than I do now. I can see your point about "comfort" in an AWD car but it still comes down to the fact that if it's a driver whose determined to go fast, it doesn't matter how comfortable he feels, he'll do it anyway. That is how the majority of those accidents occur, regardless of what they are driving.

i'm not on here to debate why you don't have an RA... i know what you are saying, ive steered my friends away from making poor decisions all the time, especially when it comes to buying cars... but if this kid really likes it, he can afford it, and hes weighed all his options already then i say go for it. If he doesn't then he should still go for something AWD. I don't know if going used will save him any maintenance costs, if you play your cards right you can buy a new awd (whatever kind) and get free maintence.

Sigh... I never said that the teen-aged drivers get into more accidents. In fact i stated earlier in the thread that it was undoubtedly true. What I said was that you claimed that it was a fact that faster cars cause the accidents in teenagers, I see nothing there that confirms, and in the interest of fairness, denies this.

It's a comfort factor as well, you can drive way faster in a Ralliart comfortably than you can in a GTS or similar car comfortably.
