Arrow 09 RA Weight Reduction Thread

Hi -

Why is the 09 RA so porky? It looks like it needs to shed some baby fat.

I was able to weigh my RA and it came in at 3511 lbs.

I'm on a mission to lower the weight on the car. Has anyone here made any succesful weight reduction measures? If so, post it here, and the calculated exact weight reduction.

I'm going to start with the Spare wheel (obviously) , and some new light weight rims (gonna take me some time to find them). Any more suggestions, post them here. Thanks.

If you want all out light-weight no style. Get 16" rims.

why not just strip the interior and various safety measures that add weight? I assume your racing or this wouldn't really be a question.

If your looking to shed weight and still have a fully kitted car your better off just making more power to offset the weight.

EDIT or you could chop your car up with a hole saw and get as much spare metal out of the car as you can... drill out some spot welds for metal pieces that just hold plastics in place. A bit of weight is in the cars wiring harness too. No stereo or power windows/whatever means you can cut down the interior wiring harness a lot.

Get some Speed Glass for the front and rear, hell even the side windows.

You could probably get the car down to 3000lbs or am I being overly optimistic here?

way overly optimistic.. lol

just get carbon fiber fenders, trunk, body kit, doors.. then gut the interrior.. remove all carpeting.. and seats.. get a carbon fiber bucket.. grab some grahm lite rims.. remove all back glass and replace with plex.. dump the spare tire... all the speakers in the doors.. the stereo.. and have someone mold you a carbon fiber dashboard.. with just your necessary guages.. you will be around 2900 then..

the problem w/ that is all weight being in the front-end instead of more balanced. If you have coilovers, you could corner balance after gutting everything, but you still don't have enough power to make a difference.

as someone has already said weight loss is an all or nothing thing. removing under 100lbs of stuff isn't going to help that much and its so much easier to make more power. However if you are looking to get rid of every last pound of weight you can then the suggestions here are pretty good.

first thing i did is got rid of the spare. (but a 100 / 150 lbs makes a big difference its almost a .200 in the quarter mile. just race some one with a passenger then kick them out and race again its almost a full car length from a dig. you might be surprised what a little work out can do for you car. (Helps BOOSTS its confidence too)

you don't have to get 16" wheels to go light weight. just get a good set of forged wheels like volks. for Example, 18x9 RE30's weigh less than the 17x8 MR BBS's on my EVO IX MR, and they're damn sure a lot lighter than the stockers on the RA.

you're missing the point because you obviously don't know what you're talking about. 16's would be lighter, but not give you the performance of a 17 or 18" wheel because of the softer sidewall. even then, you'd pick up whatever weight you lost on the wheel on the huge tire you'd be running to keep the same OD as the stock wheel. also, if the car comes stock with 17 or 18 inch wheels, chances are the brakes won't fit under a 16" wheel, and even if they did, it would look like total crap. also, if you ever wanted to upgrade the brakes, no good brake package would fit under a 16" wheel. your idea is just a bad one all the way around.
