How you drive will determine the longevity of SST
I encountered a similar issue in manual/sport mode. Downshifted too gears and floored it right away. The car was accelerating but not even close to what I would expect and the RPM remained steady (I don't remember exactly but something like 5K RPM) for about 2 seconds... I'm no expert but this felt pretty much like a lots of clutch slipping...
Honestly, I'm surprised this happened... From what the salesman told me, the car has some rev-matching. So it should not matter if I'm WOT or if I have the foot off the pedal... When engaging the clutches the ECU should be temporarily ignoring the inputs from the throttle pedal and just adjust the throttle itself to adjust the RPM and as soon as the clutches are safely engaged, open the throttle at the degree I want. That's the way I would program it, or at least something like that.

But, driving in manual mode will usually lead to worse fuel consumption due to the fact the auto/normal mode is always going for the highest possible gear for your current speed.
So what if you use engine braking alot? I currently drive a stick and I notice that my revs are really high when driving on the street/merging because I get more torque at the pedal, OOOR if I need to slow down I don't have to brake.
Does this cause anymore wear on the TC than a normal manual? The reason why I even switched to manual is because I killed my 03 lancer's auto tranny by upshifting/engine braking too often : /
engine braking is how I like to drive, it makes all the difference between a road shark or road kill : /

If you have a restless driving as you seam to mention, you better make use of your brakes a lot more than engine breaking. Brakes pads and rotors costs practically nothing compared to as transmission rebuild or replacement (whatever transmission you have) and you can replace it at home with no special tools in minutes...
