If you are hearing deep thunks at idle, this is normal too. When in park the clutches are disengaged and chatter. This is normal too.
You will hear a lot of disturbing noises coming from the engine bay at idle, fortunately these will all be normal. Between the injectors, tranny, and valvetrain noises, the car will sound like it is going to blow up.

If you enjoy spirited driving, once you get past all the different sounds and different feel that come from that gem, it you care for it properly, it will probably make you very happy. I owned A RA with a very nicely modded motor, and even though my current car has loads more power and is much stronger in the high end, from 0-60 my old RA would simply smoke my current torque monster.
If I was buying a car like the one you describe, to be safe, I would change all the fluids, particularly the tranny fluid and filter. Best of luck, and enjoy!
