Synthetic Oil & Interval

I just bought a 2013 Ralliart and love it, but must admit this car is a bigger expense than I had anticipated.

Now I was reading in the service manual that I need to change the oil every 3000 miles.... with full synthetic? The 2012 where every 5000 miles?

I work for a car part company and they all look at me as if I'm crazy when I tell them that is what I'm supposed to do. "Synthetic is good for at least 10k, 3k is too often!" etc...

Even with a pretty good discount I get I think my price on Mobil 1 is like $4.50 a quart.

What are your experiences?

I don't have a copy of that year's service manual but I know for my 2009 there are two different intervals for different driving types. The regular maintenance schedule calls for oil change after 5000 miles. However, that changes to 3000 miles if you do any of the following
• Driving on dusty, rough, muddy or salt-spread roads
• Towing or police, taxi or commercial operation
• Extensive idling and /or low speed operation
• Repeated short-trip operation at freezing temperatures
(engine not thoroughly warmed up)
• Extended use of brakes while driving
• Driving in sandy areas
• More than 50% operation in heavy city traffic during hot
weather above 90°F (32°C)

The 2011 had 7500 if you drive like a granny and 3750 for everyone else. I find my oil to be pretty beat up by 3750 miles.

I use amsoil and it still looks great after 15k miles :-) I use it on all my cars. So I just 15k interval service on all my cars.

I change the oil on my car as often as possible, usually every 1,500-2,000 miles. I pay $10 per quart too If you don't hammer it too much, i'd say you can get away with changing the oil every 5,000 miles, I personally never would go that long without changing it, but that's just me.

Do some actual used oil analyses and find out for yourself. Blackstone Labs provides free testing containers. The test itself costs around $30. Changing the oil at 2000-3000 mile is a waste of money. You can probably get at least 5000 miles if you use a decent oil, I'm going for 7000 miles on my current oil.

When all is said and done don't I HAVE to do it to preserve the warranty?

Or at that interval, every 3000, is regular oil (ie not full synthetic) an option?

Let me simplify this for you. DO NOT use regular oil, DO use synthetic, and change it every 4000-6000 miles depending on how hard you drive it. Personally, I use Castrol Edge Titanium and change it every 4000 miles, but you'll be fine waiting a little longer than that if money is tight.

To preserve the warranty, you only need proof that you have performed an oil change at the very longest recommended mileage. In your case I believe that would be every 7500 miles, though you can double check that in your owner's manual.

Like Amby said, it is a VERY good idea to have a professional oil analysis done if you are in question of your service interval. Do a google search for "Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis" and you will find their webpage where you can request a FREE sample collection kit. Then, when you do your oil change, you catch some of your used oil in the provided container and mail it back to Blackstone. The actual analysis will cost you $25, but you will get a fully detailed report on your oil's condition and it will let you know if you are changing too soon or if you should be changing sooner.

Thank you all for your feedback. Below is a link to the Maintenance Schedule

https://www.mitsubishicars.com/media...dule_Turbo.pdf

Extreme and Regular are both 3000 miles. And if its the case that I have to stick to that to preserve the warranty then what choice do I have.

I had thought Mobil 1 to be the go to full synthetic oil to use but others have said others synthetics(Shell, Valvoline, etc) would be fine and cost much less, also the AMSOIL sounds interesting. Other than AMSOIL, does anyone else have a brand preference?

I check my oil levels often. Yes 15k is what amsoil recommends for our car for spirited driving, 25k for normal driving. I drive spirited and I have no issues at 15k. Amsoil is an amazing product. On my acura I do 30k miles and change filter at 15k. Most of my friends use amsoil with no issues because of it. Just follow recommended interval that amsoil tells u for the oil u get. The race oil has to be changed more often then there high performance synthetic oil. I don't race so I just stick to there high performance synthetic.
