Cobb AP question
So, I talked with Cobb today about a couple small issues, stft, etc. I got to asking about stage 2 maps and was told that you can run just a high flow cat with stage 2 maps. He said that even though their downpipe is wider, the stock downpipe on the RA is actually pretty well built and that running a high flow cat would work great with stage 2 maps. He also said, obviously, if you did run with the aftermarket dp as well, that you would net a little more hp with stage 2. Just thought I would share that, thought that was interesting.
I have a 2009 Ralliart that I absolutely love. The only mods I have on it are tinted windows, K&N drop in air filter and rallyarmor mudflaps. I'm looking to get into some engine/power mods and I'm confused by what appears to be contradicting information.
I'm looking into getting an AP here soon. I saw this last post and thought that it would be awesome to only replace the cat with a HF cat in order to run stage 2 maps. I called COBB today and the person I talked to said that I had to install a 3" downpipe and a testpipe in order to run Stage 2.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but that would mean I have to run w/o any cat in order to run stage 2? That's a big difference between what myself SOG were told. Is there anyone that knows for sure (maybe COBB reps??) that can clarify what the minimums are to run stage 2 maps?
I also live near Denver, CO (around 5,700ft above sea leval) and all we get is 91 octane gas at the pumps. The rep I talked to stated that this limits me to the 91 octane maps as well. Is that 100% true?
Big Question: What would be the route those who have done it before take? 1.) Buy AP and have a local shop put a custom tune on it for my altitude or 2.) Buy AP and a HF cat in order to run stage 2 maps? (if that is truly the case).
If the answer is option 1 then does anyone know of a good tuner in the Denver area? All of the tuners I've found advertise that specialize in subarus (and nothing else). I understand I live in "I love Subaru country" but I was hoping to find someone who can help locally.
PS. I want the flexibility of the COBB AP since it reads as if I can have their base maps as well as custom tunes stored on it.
Thank you for your help

Hey Rough,
About your question, you dont have to run a test pipe, you can run a HFC just the same. I was told that the DP on our cars are pretty solid as far as flow and that I could, technically, run a HFC with my already 3in exhaust on a stage 2 tune until I have the DP installed. I did this at first and the car didnt feel right, so I switched back to stage 1 for now. I wouldnt run a stage 2 tune unless you have a full turbo back exhaust. As far as 91oct, the difference in HP between 91 and 93 on the stage 2 tune is pretty minimal, if any. The boost targets are exactly the same, only diff is a few hp. So running on 91oct with stage 2 would not really be that diff than running a stage 2 93oct map. As far as getting a protune, go on Cobbs website and you can look for protuners in your area. Even if they say on their site they specialize in Subis, almost all those places will tune a Mitsu, its not "that" different. You could also always get a tune done using Access tuner race software, download for free on website, and have a tuner like Mellon or Ivey make a tune for you by using your logs and send it to you. That way you have a tune made for your mods and its a little more cost effective than a traditional dyno tune. Good Luck!

^^^ The shop who tuned my car specializes in Subarus as well, but they did a great job tuning my Ralliart. Just call around and ask some probing questions, and if they sound clueless when you're talking to them on the phone, move on to the next shop until you find someone with solid experience working on Mitsus....
Thanks for the advice. It helped me make up my mind. I'm going to start with the AP and a custom tune from a local tuner who uses the COBB SW. It should address the altitude issues we have here as well as give me safe maps to run (stock cobb maps) when I go to lower altitudes. I can keep saving and adding things on later as well.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Not a problem Rough, Cobb is the way to go, you have the freedom of getting a protune, making your own tune, sticking with OTS, getting a tune from a major tuner and saving it to your AP, all this and you can flash back to the stock file and dealer will never know. Why anyone would go a different route doesnt make sense to me, but to each his own. Cobb should be coming out with more maps for the Ralliart pretty soon, lets keep our fingers crossed.
Subaru and evo tuning are quite different.

If anyone would know if would be ^. I think what I was getting at was that it seems alot of tuners that tune subis tune mitsus as well. I live in new england, it is all subaru up here. Not only have I not seen any other Ralliarts, but for every Mitsu I do see, I see about 10 subis. All the tuners up here, with the exception of Tuningalliance, claim to tune only Subis. But most that I have actually contacted have said they do tune Mitsus as well, they just advertise for subis because the majority market is subaru. Good luck with the tune Rough, let us know how it all works out.
