You shouldn't need to worry about downshifting in any mode as the computer shifts if the RPM drops to a set amount anyway, even in manual mode.
If you think it shifts too late, just shift yourself but imo, if the engine sounds normal and doesn't shake the car to bits, it should be fine?

I mostly drive in manual-sport and when coming to a stop I mostly downshift myself through the gears except 2-1 which I often hand over to the computer.
Sometimes I just cruise in normal-auto as it's very relaxing. It's a matter of situation and mood really.
