NOTE
- If you select "Sport" mode while the engine is cold, the transmission may shift up at different speeds compared to when the engine is warm. This is simply the operation of the control system to warm the engine quickly. It does not indicate a malfunction.

What I gather from that is the TC-SST will upshift in manual mode automatically as part of the control system. This is to prevent a high revving engine when the engine is not warmed up. Of course, I can't find that exact explanation anywhere else in the manual.
What the manual said was "Sport" mode ...
What you said is Manual mode... I believe they are completely different...

When I'm in Manual mode (shifter pushed to the left) it never upshift for me....

it does for me, but ONLY when the engine/transmission is cold. Well, let me rephrase it. There are certain situations where it will automatically upshift when i'm in manual normal mode and the engine is cold. For example, if I'm in manual normal mode and the engine is cold, and i accelerate to 25 - 30 mph shifting around 2 - 2.5K RPMs, that puts me in 4th gear. If I then follow that up with slowing down to a near stop (just slow enough for it to auto-downshift to 2nd gear), the car will then automatically upshift to 4th again as I accelerate, but it won't go past the gear that I manually selected prior to slowing down. The only time this happens is when the engine/transmission is cold. After its fully warmed, it does not exhibit this behavior.
