why not just replace the oem cooler with the misimoto cooler, it would still air cool the fluid while your driving and then flick the fan on to cool faster when needed... might make it possible to not have to upgrade the pump

Sounds too good to be true. Have to look at OEM specs somewhere.

This is NOT designed to be the primary cooler, its a secondary option for intra-track sessions. I have been running it for almost 1000 miles with no problem. RRE has a similar set-up in design but a plate style cooler, running perfectly for 8000 miles.
As I stated in the beginning, this is not an everyday/everyman mod, definitely for a certain type. However those inclined can take this and set-up a system for their own intentions. This is simply to let people know it is possible to facilitate. Just know your intentions and limitations (both personal and the design)

why wouldn't you be able to use it as a primary cooler, if you custom fab'd brackets to locate it in its OEM location, will it not cool effectivly without the fan running consantly?

not saying i know better, just curious why it couldn't/shouldn't be used as a primary

If anyone is interested, I am almost 100% positive that the P/N for the AMS transmission cooler is Derale 15850:

And the thermostat is Derale 16759:

Both can be found on SummitRacing.com and JEGS.com.

I am pretty sure that AMS would rape me in the ******* if I put together a bracket to mount that bad boy. However, I will be doing that for my personal Ralliart. I predict that the price of the whole thing would be $350 (a solid $200 less than the AMS unit). Granted, that will include a thermostat that is not offered with the AMS unit (as far as I know).

I would recommend to the good people of AMS to start including the thermostat with the actual fan-aided cooler. It is almost useless without it. I believe that Derale sells a fan that can be mounted to a regular cooler to create a setup with 80% of the capacity of the upgrade for 1/4 the cost.

The aftermarket cooler does have a lot more capacity than the stock unit, and I believe that it is a plate-design as opposed to a fin and tube design. Much more efficient.

Good find man. Makes my life a lot easier. Are you planning on running a secondary pump? I just can't seem to decide one way or another for certain.

Edit: Scratch that, my brain just went derrrrr for a second. I just realized you're talking about replicating the AMS setup. Let us all know how it goes!

I am going to do that for now. I am just not sure that a 2nd cooler is worth it.

^+1

Really, I feel like adding the fan to the stock cooler would make a world of difference.

That and probably using a better transmission fluid than OEM. After seeing some posts of how bad the fluid looks after a few thousand miles, makes me leery of pushing the transmission hard at all.

That setup as described above is currently being run on a multitude of cars. There is no reason why you cannot upgrade the stock cooler. I hope that that answers your question. It was kind of vague.

sorry about that,

mainly i was just referring to the guy who said it wasn't designed as a primary cooler, but more to the point i was really wondering if and which cooler people are using to replace the OEM cooler and if the mishimoto is an option and not just AMS

AMS doesn't make their own cooler. The Derale cooler is what they went with.

There are likely Mishimoto coolers out there that "might" work as a replacement. You just have to find the right one.

That is the unit that AMS uses as a direct replacement for the stock cooler.

Edit: Those P/N's should be the same or almost the same as the ones used in this kit:
