I considered the "sandwich plate" route too, but I couldn't justify it when the car already comes with ports to hook-up to. Not that anyone else would see it or anything, but I'd know it was there and it would annoy me. Oh well, that's the price I pay, I guess

If you manage to find one of the fittings in that kit that fits directly into the existing cooler ports, then that may be a different story...

I was told you would need to tap (i.e. with a die) into those ports, as they are sealed. The labor to do this didn't make it worth while to me, but being you have a whole shop available...all you need is the time to remove everything to the left of the block (at least that is the "empty" side, only what the motor mount, windshield fluid bottle, and couple other odds and ends).
I want to do this as a weekend project, and I just dont have the confidence to "tap" my block in my garage

I just had the car up on the lift (oil change, rotate, what have you) and I looked up at where the oil cooler lines are supposed to be run above the filter housing, and it appears that there are hex-head plugs in the ports where you would connect the lines.

I didn't try to actually remove them as they were kind of a ***** to reach without removing the whole under-tray, but I can't imagine Mitsu would bore and thread-tap multiple port locations and install plugs on ports that are not completely bored-through. Once I get my hands on a cooler and attempt an install I can confirm whether or not they are, but I don't see why not. Maybe Brian or someone else who has already installed an oil cooler can chime in.

Alright gents, partial update for ya'll. Last weekend I went to the track with Alliance Motorsports; it was 112* on the dash thermostat in Rosamond, CA at Streets of Willow. Perfect opportunity to truly test the Mishimoto Tranny Cooler
Well, one other RA besides me to act as my "control"; and sure enough overheated the tranny and pulled off. Me, never had an issue with shifts let alone anything as extreme as going into limp mode Unfortunately I forgot to bring my laptop to log actual tranny temps (hence being a "partial update"), but I'll let the heat and windy road course speak for itself, here are some picks:

Lots of Mits. out at the track that day; that always makes it more fun. Glad to hear everything went well. Did you ever go through with the engine oil cooler install? I haven't had a chance to get back under there and open one of those ports yet...

Not yet, hope to do it in the next 4-6 weeks, along with an upgraded radiator.
Yeah there was about 100-120 drivers on Sat. Most all the Mitsu's were w/ Alliance.
Mike W and Scott G from RRE were there; in fact in the first pic you can see a white MR under the canopy, that's Scott's X. Completely stock except for a drop-in filter, his brand-new custom-modded dp, and of course his specialty which is the tune. Put down 330 on the Dyno Packs. Having a stock exhaust (including the cat) it sounds super quite, until he steps on; then it makes the most insane hissing-whistle sound I've ever heard.

Next time you have an RA on the lift, can you take a pic of the cooler ports so I can get a better visualization of what exactly would be needed to use those rather than a sandwich plate method.
TIA!

very glad to hear this worked out!

Can you post a link to where you got the cooler and fan? I found a few of them but they have different dimensions.

Is this the same one you got?

THanks!

Ok, finally got my car in the shop with some time to mess around. Here are the pics of the plugged "ports" I was talking about. These are the same locations used for the EvoX oil cooler lines and I can't imagine that they'd install plugs into ports that are not all the way through into functional oil passages.

Here's the view from the bottom. (Don't look at the filter, look in the mirror to the left of the filter )

And then views from the top with the black plastic "cooling panel" removed

I just need to find an affordable EvoX oil cooler and I can give this a shot. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

NICELY DONE!!!!
Am I looking at the allen-key shaped one or the bolt?
Perfect timing as just this morning I was looking around at Mocal and Setrab coolers (trying to decide whether to buy a kit or piece something together myself).

Don't know whats up with the difference between the bolt located next to the allen bolt? Assuming would need that as well. Removed my washer reservior to set up a oil cooler been researching idea etc. I'm going to see find these oem fittings oem cooler/ lines and start from there.
