Blown motor--opinions?
Sorry to once again hear about the bad new and also for you to know that it could of been avoided if you were to choose a different tuner has to be frustrating. Looks like you already know what you have to do but if I can help you in any way just let me know and I can lend some advice if you want it.

Did you open up the tuner's map and try to change anything yourself ? CFT is from what I have read a good shop and group of guys.
I am sure they could post his map when he left there if they saved there maps for every car they tune.

I have spoken with the tuner, and he stands by his work. He says that he has tuned many Evos, including several with more ignition timing than mine.

The turbo was stock, peak boost was set at and never exceeded 22 psi.
I have no idea what broke first, but when they pulled the head off, I could see a cracked piston and bent-up valves.
CFT came highly-recommended, and there are lots of positive posts on these forums about them. Now I have no idea who to trust.

I did not mean you killed your own car. Do you have a wideband to monitor AF? If so what was it reading on WOT?
So what did he say he would do for you? Since he admits it was his map?

Did you change any of your setup?
Speed density is dangerous. If you tune on SD and realize you have a boost leak, fix the boost leak, your A/F will be way off (lean enough to crack or melt a piston). It is unlikely that the tuner messed the car up. They tuned a 668whp GT35 evo ProccoEvo here, a stock turbo 460whp on c16 and are working on a NASTY black Evo that will be someone to keep an eye on in upcoming weeks.

believe us, that map is seriously fuc*ked.
your fuel map should look smooth and follow the shape of your torque curve.
your timing map should retard as it comes near peak torque, slowly ramping up as you approach redline.
the stock basemap on the aem is much closer to what your maps should look like. the stock basemaps fuel settings are just set too rich.

It doesnt look like it wasnt tuned properly. Hence the flat map. I dont tune DSM's so I cant comment on the excessive ignition timing. 13 degrees from 5,000RPM to 7,700RPM and 9lbs to 21lbs? Also, the vacuum portions of the map are very similar to AEM's startup MAP calibration. Do you have a dyno sheet you can post from the day of the tune? Not pointing fingers. Just point a couple things I noticed out.
