Could be the coils. Also could be the cam sensor as mentioned it may be 180 degrees off.
Load your buddy's map in it and put it in his car and see if it works in his. That way you can eliminate the aem.

If you don't get stat sync then you won't get the coils to fire nor the injectors to fire, it's that simple. With no stat sync then the cam or crank sensor are the issue. First I would check all the fuses, then check the power and ground to the cam and crank sensors, if this checks out check the signal coming from the cam and crank sensor while cranking the car.

If this all checks out I would see if a local could swap AEM boxes with you or put your box in their car with their .cal file like mentioned above and go from there.

One thing is you can change the cam rising edge and the cam following edge, this may help. from on to off and/or vice versa
