First off, the engine blowing up, there is a decent chance it is not the fault of the AEM or the tuner to be honest. I have seen some odd stock piston failures happen. I've seen them crack right down the middle, no reason for the way it failed. You may have just had a piston failure unrelated to the tuning.

As for the AEM being inferior to the factory ECU. That is complete crap. The knock control in the AEM will do anything YOU tell it to, if you don't know what to tell it that doesn't make the AEM inferior it makes the tuner inferior to the Mitsubishi engineers. The speed density............works perfectly, I do not agree it is inferior to a MAF system.
Well said

Doesn't the factory ECU respond to a limited range of frequencies from the knock sensor that correlate to the range of frequencies produced by detonation?

If I understand it correctly, the AEM looks at an average voltage from the knock sensor.

Seems like the factory ECU would be more effective at distinguishing between mechanical noise and detonation.

I've seen built engines from other companies completely mess with the factory knock sensor and factory ECU. You point goes both ways and there is more to tuning a car than just relying completely on what the knock sensor is telling you as far as detonation goes.

The AEM EMS Knock Control, again, if setup properly works great. I once had a customer that got a bad tank of gas or put the wrong octane in. He called me saying the car was falling on it's face. Came by. The Knock Control was taking over. I told him to run the car out of gas. Refill and come back. He did. Everything was fine from there on after with NO adjustments. Only time I have had that happen but goes to show if the AEM EMS Knock Control is setup correctly it will work great

alpha, agreed.

The knock control in the AEM if set up correctly is excellent. It's saved countless engines here, from bad fuel, alky kit failures and vacuum lines blowing off of fuel pressure regulators.

I had this happen to an EVO IX on the dyno a couple weeks back. AEM EMS Knock Control. Went on to make 523whp uncorrected For it happening

Ok, got the car back. Got bigger pistons, rods etc. Got new cams (Tomei for evo9). I went ahead and told SGP to put the AEM back on and they said the same thing was about to happen so they stopped. I am so aggrivated. They told me to sell the AEM and get the V-Pro and told me that the definately can get it right. I dont understand this, there are countless Evo 9's out there with the AEM. They said they sent the box back and AEM said there is nothing wrong. WTF!!! Right now the car runs great but i want my EMS put in!!

Wow..............the problem is not with the AEM, I am sure of it. Why don't you take your car somewhere else? Haul it up here, I'll tune it

Why so many people rush to EMS standalone systems is beyond me.
In my oppinion 10% of AEM EMS users will fail to turn on knock control. I see a corelation.

nutrulz, where did you quote that from? It's unbelievable.

There is absolutely NOTHING inferior about the AEM, speed density or the knock control. The short comings of the AEM is the huge amount of idiots trying to tune them. If the shoe fits, wear it.

The knock control will always be inferior as long as AEM inputs raw data without advanced interpretation as the stock ECU does before determining what is knock.

SGP in Houston? They know Nissan's, not Mitsu's. Not bashing SGP, but they just don't have a Mitsu following at your level of modification. That's why we fly in tuners from other areas for dyno days.
