Got AEM then blew motor while tuning
I got my AEM EMS and a shop was tuning the car. While in the middle of the tune the motor went. Piston #1 cracked and from what i saw, 2 of the valves were slightly messed up. The shop is paying for all the repairs but has anyone ever had this kind of problem? I have heard nothing but great news on the AEM EMS and AMS even recommended it so i didnt think something like this would happen. Now im not even sure that i want to have the EMS installed. Good thing about it is that since the motor is apart, i got to upgrade all the internals with NO labor costs.
Believe me, you shouldn't even think about blaming it on the EMS. We know the EMS is an awesome tuning device, but just like most things, it's only as good as the person using it. If they screwed up and went too lean without the knock control turned on, then it might have detonated it to hell and back. It also may not have been anything they did but your motor was weak. The good thing is they are paying for the fix, but your next worry is whether or not they can be trusted to tune an Evo with a standalone.
Its a very reputable shop so i have confidence in them. Im not blaming it on the EMS at all. Just got me alittle scared to do mods now (lol). The motor is at the machine shop now and nothing is wrong with the heads or block just the pistons and 2 valves and a few hot spots. As far as the motor being weak, it seemed VERy strong. Im just scared that this will happen while im daily driving it cause this is getting really expensive really quick (lol). I know this sounds gay, but i rather spend the money on MODS than REPAIRS. Again, so does everyone else. Just wanted to see if anyone else had this similar issue.
IMO about 10% of all AEM EMS speed density users will end up blowing their engines.
It goes with the territory of MAFless tuning and inferior knock control to the factory ECU.
Why so many people rush to EMS standalone systems is beyond me.

ACTUALLY, i did it cause i want to run meth inj and also running a NX intercooler sprayer. So the Nx sprayer isnt going on, and i dont think i will run meth either. My car is plenty quick with the stock ECU and i think im just going to go with that again instead of the EMS. Still deciding what im going to do. If someone offered, they can have the EMS and NX intercooler kit.

If you are looking for map switching on the fly that changes the maps when the spray comes on, the MAF Translator PRO is what you need. It is a piggyback fuel and boost controller that retains the factory knock control.
You can run meth, nitrous, nitromethane, racefuel, E85 and propane on the stock ECU if you wanted to.
