AEM Basic Unit?
AEM Basic Unit?
If I just wanted to run the basic unit for awhile (stock MAF), could it still be tuned well? Ie. Better than with a S-afc II? I know ideally switching to the speed density will yield better results, but even the basic unit after being properly tuned should give me better numbers??? It's got other features that could be used as well. Any advice would be helpful.
Please don't lecture me on switching to the speed density right away. Money is one issue. Down the road, I will be picking it up. Thanks.

Some EVOs have been able to run with the stock MAF, but it is likely to not be much of an improvement over stock. First off, the EMS isn't a power adder directly. It is a tool that should only be used after you have modified the engine to the point that the stock ECU is no longer up to the task.
It is $120 more for speed density.
I don't understand the reasoning of people that think the EMS should be installed right after the intake and exhaust...

why ,,,because its the best hp mod for the car.. You can do an ems on a bone stock car .. with boost controler and make 304whp ...through the stock bov, stock exhaust... Add a full turbo back exhaust and you'll make 340 whp ... You cant touch that ..

I totally agree with Mark. I'm probably one of the few here who did the AEM as my first mod and from what I've seen you can get a minimum of 50HP from it and up to 90~100 with a boost increase and fuel.

Certainly it is a good unit, I mean I am a huge EMS supporter, but I don't recommend it to people that don't have the experience to be able to tune it themselves.
From an overall cost perspective though, it is best to jump to the EMS as soon as possible since the EMS replaces so many other components that you would normally buy, like boost control, wideband O2, stutterbox, launch control, and a bunch of gauge inputs.
I guess it comes down to how confident the owner is with tuning it, or relying on a tuner shop to take care of it for them. The main problem is that there are a lot of places that claim to be "tuners" but are terrible, and then the owner has a very bad EMS experience. If the owner is close to a good EMS tuner, then that helps a great deal.
