Lancer 4G93/4G63 Spark Plugs/Leads
Hi guys.
I actually own a GSR (1995), how ever I'm just wondering exactly what Spark Plugs and Leads you guys use for your EVO's?
I just changed my oil and spark plugs on the week end, and now it's making a weird noise. It's like a popping noise, almost as if the spark is jumping off one of the leads and earthing on the heads. But when I drive it, it doesn't miss or anything.
The plugs i put in are NGK Platinums, with a 1.1mb gap. How ever, in the Mitsubishi Owner's Manual it says the gap should be .7-.8mm's. So anyway, I put the old spark plugs back in - no difference, still making the noise.
A friend who used to own a GSR came and had a look at it, he said it was sparking from the leads earthing onto the heads.
Apparently the leads i have to get cost $95AUD - the guy at the shop reckons they're specifically made for my engine.
So, what spark plugs/leads does everyone use? Also, what oil do you guys use in your GSR's/EVO's?

umm is the "popping" like tapping. If you put back your old spark plugs and you can still here the noise it might not be that it could be the valve lifter noise which makes a loud tapping sound supposedly its common in gsr's?

Plugs and leads
Hi there
I have the 2002 Lancer Coupe with 1.8L engine Mine still has the standard leads but have changed plugs for NGK Iridium plugs. Haven't noticed as much difference as when I had them in my Camry although I did attain 196 Km/h in a straight line speed test 2 days ago.
I won't use Platinum tho, too expensive and too short lived compared to Iridium. Iridium is more expensive to buy, but lasts years longer!!
Iridium is 8x harder than Platinum so this is where the longer life comes from.
Cheers

If it doesn't miss while driving then its most probably not the leads... but as a test, lag the extension bits (that go into head) over the full length with insulation tape... make it as thick as you can on the bits closest to the head... and see if the noise is still there.
For the record - I run NGK copper plugs (1 heat range colder) and NGK leads. You can get NGK leaps specifically for the Evo and I called NGK to get the part number and then ordered them through Repco. Were about $50 for the set from memory.
Hope this helps
