You also have to remember that the Evo was built with racing in mind, hence the lighter weight. Even from experience with driving both cars, the GSX definitely felt heavier. The Evo feels like a lightweight. Maybe it's because my GSX had the small TD04 turbo.

I have an 05 EVO VIII and a 98 Eclipse GSX that's modded (big FP28 turbo, Hahns upgraded SMIC, fuel pump re-wire, Turbo XS H34 BOV, Road Race Engineering UICP upgrade, Injen intake, 2.5" turboback exhaust incl HFC (Buschur + Borla), Hallman MBC set at 16 psi). Between my cars it's no contest. The EVO has way more power down low. The T28 (flows similar to the DSM 16G upgrades) has a lot more turbo lag than the stock EVO 16G. Granted, my DSM has more power potential - fuel pump, 550 injectors, SAFC, and 20 psi of boost is possible. I prefer to keep my daily driven DSM reliable.

A T28 flows about 36lb/min peak. That is about the same as a small 16G, which I wouldn't buy these days.
A big 16G flows around 39lb/min.
An Evo III 16G flows ~43-44lb/min max on my car. The Evo III 16G and the Evo VIII have basically the same compressor wheel. The VIII's compressor wheel is just a mirror image of the III's.
Each lb/min is about 10hp on a well tuned car. So they are similar, if you think that a 7-8 lb/min difference is similar.
That is about the same difference as between an FP Green and an Evo III 16G.So I'm not surprised that an Evo would take your Eclipse down, especially with lower boost.
There's curb weight and GVW (gross vehicle weight).
Curb weight is generally defined as the vehicle, with all fluids (including fuel) topped off. Just like that, on a scale.
GVW is defined as curb weight + Maximum Allowed Cargo (ie- passengers and stuff).
So, what this means is a car can have a curb weight of 3100 lbs, and a GVW of 3800 lbs. Thus meaning that the car with occupants should not exceed 3800 lbs. ie- no more than 700lbs of cargo. Generally 3-4 people, or a bunch of junk.
Most people make the mistake of reading the GVW plackard on the door jam, thinking this is how much the car weighs. Obviously, this is not the case.
I am sure that is what your friend has done, read the GVW plackard. I hope this clears things up.

i think we should clarify this poll though.
if we are saying a 90 GSX vs an 03 evo (1st year for both cars in the US), then the GSX would win due to being around 2900-3100lbs vs evo's 3146-3285lbs.
if we are saying 92-94 gsx vs evo it would be a tie (both cars similar weights).
if we are saying 95-99 GSX vs evo, the evo would win (2nd gen GSX's around 3400-3800lbs).

Where do you think all that weight comes from? The Eclipse is a 2 door coupe with basically the same driveline as the Evo, and it is smaller than an Evo. Jeez, use some common sense! A 2G Eclipse weighs about 100lbs LESS than an Evo. All of the 1Gs weigh even less than the 2Gs.
My 1997 GSX weighs 3150lbs. And it even came with cruise control!
I(eclipse GSX) ran a 13.4 @ 103.7mph twice yesterday at Fontana Raceway, LA with a horrible launch (2.0 60') at 18 PSI with a big16g, full weight (+a/c, cruise contro + deck + front speakrsl still connected).
There were several evo's, including MR's there that ran very similar times but i'm sure it wasn't their best times that night. Evo's were RIPPING it up at the tracks...
I saw a handful of evo's running 11's.
did i mention? I'm AUTOMATIC.
The guys on the atdsm boards run faster with a upgraded torque converter... that's going to be my next mod for sure, along with a GT3x turbo & 850cc's. My WW evo with my bro driving is basically equilivant on highway runs.

I'm not sure where you guys are getting some of your weights from on here, but I have a GSX and I've had it weighed, and mine weighs 3,219 without me in the car and about half a tank of gas. Given similiar hp levels, its definitly a drivers race. Yes, the evo has more power stock, but it runs a much bigger turbo stock with much higher boost levels... Throw a 16G on an eclipse, (like I have on mine) and they will run low 13's all day easily. The handling obviously isnt up to snuff with my evo, but as far as straight lines are concerned, they are very comparable.

A 2g GSX vs an Evo VIII with the same hp/tq would probably give the Evo a slight advantage due to the fact it can hold its boost/power all the way to 7500 rpm, and because the suspension allows for MUCH smoother runs. Unless the Eclipse has equivalent suspension mods to prevent the rocking chair effect, then it will lose valuable time on the launch and 1-2 shift. The only thing going for the GSX would be a slight weight advantage.
All in all, I think the better driver will win.

So I'm not so sure the suspension makes a huge difference. So long as it isn't worn out, of course. He certainly seemed to do alright.
Are stock Evo cams really all that different from 2G DSM cams? 264s are available for both cars, anyway, and work quite well with a 16G.
