Wheel spin off the line in an Evo?
Wheel spin off the line in an Evo?
Never owned an AWD car before, and the last car I had down the track was my old Mustang, which I put over 100 passes on and ran to a best of 11.9, so I'm not really a stranger to drag racing
. However, I could not get the Evo to launch. Track temp was 35 degrees, and it was damn cold out there. I was slipping the clutch out at 5,000 to 5,500, and it felt like it was spinning initially, and then it would hook and rocket out the hole. However, I could smell the clutch burning and wonder whether it was clutch chatter as opposed to wheelspin. I figured it was wheelspin because the Advans were so cold. Here's my results anyway; not very impressive at all:
1st run (no cool down)
60': 2.034
330': 5.640
1/8: 8.654
MPH: 82.04
1000': 11.328
1/4: 13.622
MPH: 97.59 (car seemed to die a bit in 4th)
2nd run
60': 2.052
330': 5.682
1/8: 8.711
MPH: 81.91
1000': 11.363
1/4: 13.587
MPH: 99.93
3rd run
60': 2.047
330': 5.645
1/8: 8.730
MPH: 79.74
1000': 11.430
1/4: 13.685
MPH: 98.81
Very stramge timeslips to say the least...

Ya wheel spin is the cause. The stock advan in the cold become hard as a rock with no traction. Still some good times are you completly stock ? Cause if so once it warms up you should be hitting atleat 13.2-3

. Anyway, all that's on it is a grounding kit so yeah, I'm stock. I was hoping with the cooler weather that my trap speeds would have been higher but I guess I have one of the weaker cars. Oh well, that's it for the car down the 1320 for now, I just wanted to see what she would do. Maybe after a few mods I might revisit...

Not far off! My '02 WRX has seen 200+ 1/4 mile passes with a best 13.75 @ 95.89 mph with a tranny busting 1.531 60 ft. ! 2 weeks ago I had my tranny rebuilt & clutch replaced...I'm not so drag crazy now.
But it was fun while I felt invincible!
nice launches are a blast, but they WILL take their toll on your car.........

As far as wheel spin try lowering your launch revs a tad but like most everyone has stated, it was mostly due to the weather.
5 grand Drag launches are certain death to a stock clutch but your tranny should hold up pretty well. You have to understand, a clutch is a part that is designed to wearout. Just like your brakes. Alot of the people who break their trannies (excluding WRX's...sorry) are because they are using TOO stiff or TOO grabby of a clutch. The way I see it is I'd rather replace a $400 dollar clutch than a $1500 tranny
Don't be afraid to use your strenght to it's full advantage!
