Not so smooth Shifting
I got the car for almost 4 month now and I'm new to the world of stick driving. I still can't manage to get a smoother shifting from 1st to 2nd. Now I know that the evo is not a quiet ride kinda car, cuz you can feel every bump on the road. So as I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd the car seem to bump forward. What am I doing wrong. How can I shift without having the feeling that car is bumping forward. Once in awhile I managed to shift without the car bumping forward and that is when I'm releasing the clutch slowly. Sometime eventhough I tried to release the clutch slowly, I still get the bump. It's sorta like someone is hitting me in the back of my head. The worse part is looking at the person sitting in the passenger seat. I can totally see their head moved.
if its pulling way hard, u are over reving before you let the clutch out. try replacing the shift line. i notice the clutch line resevoir ALL THE TIME. thats what gives that back-and-forth pull u get after a sloppy shift.
My brother drove my car and it seem to be smooth I didn't feel that jerky feeling after he shifted to 2nd. I understood what he was saying, but when I tried I failed. 3rd, 4th and 5th gear seem fine, but man I hate that second gear.
I know exactly what you mean ... it happens to me also. From 1st to 2nd i still get that little jerk. The Evo is my firs manual car and what i have learned is to give it some gas at the time your letting the clutch out and try shifting a little bit faster so the rpm's dont go down to much. i dont know if that helps and maybe iam wrong. just my view.

Let the clutch out slower going into 2nd, be smoother with it. The Evo driveline isn't forgiving at all and it needs finesse. Also try to notice where the revs are when you engage 2nd. For example, if you shift at 3k out of first, I think 2nd will come in at like 2100 or something like that. So when you push the clutch in, stay off the gas until the needle drops to like 2400 then lightly get back into the gas while releasing the clutch. You'll get it with practice.

It's just all about smooth with this car, it's different from driving a stick in FWD or RWD. This is my first AWD car and I've driven stick since I was 16 and I still had to adjust a little. With 4 wheels all connected, you just can't drop the clutch really in any shift, you have to let it out in a smooth but quick motion. I forget sometimes too or get lazy and just pop it going into 2nd and get a little jerk sometimes. Soon enough you'll learn it all and be able to shift very quickly and smoothly. Just keep at it and keep trying it 'til it works. Good luck!

Still different drivetrains though. And the Evo has that clutch restrictor which is I bet what is giving you the problems. It makes the cluch more vague and harder to modulate, but is there to save the rest of the drivetrain.
And So I've been practicing, well it's getting better. I just gotta let out the clutch more smoother. But once in a while I get that jerky feeling when I don't pay attention to it. But overall I'm getting better at it.

1. Accelerate in 1# until it's time for shifting (different for every person, and situation!)
2. Push the clutch in (try deep, as in fully depressed, for starters) and shift into 2#. This needs to be pretty smooth and quick, a flowing motion... For this ENTIRE step NO gas at all, just lift off it...
(3. Now the leaver is in 2# the revs start to drop due to no gas and clutching...)
4. Release the Clutch smoothly... very fast overall, but very slow at the point where it starts "connecting". Practise is the key here...
5. Now the final point: AS SOON AS THE CLUTCH HAS CONNECTED UND YOU FELT SO; lift your foot of the clutch in a hurry, WHILE LEADFOOTING THE GAS and you'll be off!!!
The important part again:
No gas during the shift at all, "connect" in second gear and step on it... There is NO point for ANY gas during shifting!!! (some shifting techniques excluded, but they are mostly dumb and not worth it...)
