Any automatic techniques?
I have heard that it is best to leave the car in drive, rather than shifting while racing. I'm not sure if this is true or not, because I drive a manual. But, if it is true, it probably doesn't matter much.
Yeah!! Trade it in for a stick!
I don't think it would make much of a difference manually shifting an automatic. That would depend at what RPM's your car normally shift at.
Try it and see it's under WARRANTY!

Exactly!
actually the lancer automatic isnt all that bad.
To take off on the line try power brakeing
Hold the brake down firmly and start giving it gas and let ur RPMS hit about 3 and then just let go of the brake
WHen the lancer is pushed with automatic it does a good job of changing gears, it stays in the powerband.
Its not too bad.

Someone blew up his transmission(auto) so I'd be weary if I were you. Few too many neutral drops perhaps. Anyways he had only 5k or so on the thing from much racing and he completely blew his up maybe even damaged the housing.

Here's my thoughts on the 1 2 and N! I may be wrong but this is what I believe (somebody say so if I am wrong). First and second gear are only used if you are trying to drive uphill or while towing something and need the extra torque! Shifting from first to second then drive will not make an automatic drive like a stick! If done right it may improve your time but at the cost of potential damage to the trans. Nuetral should NEVER be used in dragging! Nuetral drops are probally one of the worst thing you can do to an auto!
are there any shift kits available? my Z28 dropped almost 1/3 of a second just by using a shift kit. it also breaks loose into 3rd gear(80mph). any way the automatic trans is way to soft of a shift. i need some head-snapping, g-pulling, wheel-screeching, go-fast goodies for my four banger.

well i have an auto, and in searching around i found that some companies sell some stuff, for autos, not lancer yet, but like b and m they cell a shifter that allows you to slide your auto, from 1,2,3,4, with out having to pull anybuttons. Also i came across some other sites where people actually got rid of that button, but they all said, just to be careful that you dont throw it into reverse, which i found with the lancer is imposible, while its in motion. But in being able to manipulate the gears you can stay closer, to the red zone, and shift when you want it to rather when the computer, wants it to. There are also tranny fluids, but what my hope in the future, if anyone knows of a kit, that ill be able to throw a sequiential shifting method into an automatic, then ill be in heaven, but who knows i might not have the car that long, but, you can manipulate the gears, to make it shift when you want it to, try it some time, just be smart, and stay out of the red zone.
An automatic uses a computer to tell the gearbox when to shift gears. You can buy a race chip for $$$ for the computer so that you can simply push a button and the computer will change the timing of the shifts. Even still, you won't be able to control the shifting themselves
But there is hope! Right now there is a Japanese company that is making a universal sequential shifter that will turn any automatic into a semimatic
, but they only got it working with Honda cars right now
.
As for techniques to use with an auto, keep the car in neutral and the rpms hovering at 1000-2500 till you gun the gas and yank the shifter all the way into 1st gear (don't forget to hold that button down
). then shift into 2nd, still gunning it, when you redline and continue until you're in drive. That'll give you the heavy acceleration like a manual, until you're in drive and the computer takes over...
A Tech for turning is if it's a sharp turn, or a turn like a 4way intersection, just before turning, heavy break and shift into 2nd and gun your way into and out of the turn, shifting when redlining. If you find that you're understeering, just release the gas and your tires should then regrip the road and the car should turn. Best way to do this is with the Left-Foot-Breaking technique since you can just gently press on the brake with your left foot instead of having to let off the gas to help the car turn. Still, use caution when doing this for safety sake.
Just a warning, both of these techniques will seriously damage/wear out your tranny and engine and possibly other stuff if you use it too often. The more you use these techniques, the quicker the parts will wear, but even without using them, they'll wear out eventually, so no harm in doing it once in awhile
