Handbreak - what am i risking?

Ok, i have never pulled the handbreak to get my Lancer sideways...but what am i risking doing it..and what exactly do i do...

I asume..on aproach of the corner i pick a good line and press the button on the handbreak and pull it just enough for the back wheels to lock up for a second then releasing it again..is that correct?

and while the car is sliding..what gears should i be in? and should i be powering through the corner while the back is out sideways?

Wouldnt doing this constantly shatter something importnat ?

Please tell me now befour it cost me heaps of cash :P

I think you should start by handing over the keys to a responsible driver and cutting up your license. If you're seriously considering doing this on a road, then I feel sorry for all those in your state.

Please don't do this on the road, only at the track. Specially in Victoria, you will be in deep trouble.

Okay, basics are, come into the corner, rock your car to upset it by yanking 1 way then the other, then clutch in, pull the handbrake up with your finger on the button, and don't let it out until its down. then put the brake down, clutch out accerator off, and try to aim the car where you wanna go as you tank slap your way down the road.

BTW, you shoudln't break anything, as long as you don't hit a curb, and try to do it in a fluid motion, otherwise jerking things can cause fatigue..

okay so here is the HANDBRAKE deal (it isnt an ebrake if you ever use it in a situation that isnt an emergency) i am still learning how to do this in my evo, after only a few attemps, but i had it down in all my other cars. no matter what you do, allow room, and remember to let off. in my virgin days of handbraking i always was worried about so much stuff that i would almost rip that thing out of the console and slide to a stop. it looked cool but never accomplished much. let it go, be in the right gear, depending on how fast you want to do itwith all the play in second, it is perfect usually, unless you are getting crazy, feel free to hold down the gas once you get decent at it, with the clutch in you can almost rev-match for a super fast accel after the slide. practice in parking lots, and in wet conditions, remember that your car will slide different on different surfaces, so be carefull. this is a great technique that you can get really good at and not hurt your car at all. it is a neccessity in all rally racing, not just on gravel. htose guys dont do it cause it looks cool, they do it because it is the best way to get a controled soin and get out of as fast as possible. watch them sometimes, gronholm is famous for using it as often as possible.

Uh... I'm never on these forums but what the hell are you people talking about? The guy has a FWD lancer.

Troy,

You cannot hurt anything other than your brakes or the scenery by pulling your handbrake in a FWD car. It will screw with ABS if you have to use the real brakes during the pull. No need to push in the clutch in a FWD car, no reason to match speeds... just pull it and see what happens.

Take it out in the dirt and practice. You should have plenty of dirt where you live. I probably won't see this thread ever again. Email me if you have questions. You won't hurt anything and no prep is needed to pull that lever.

As sais above, try this on an empty dirt lot. You can hurt something, however, if you make harsh and abrubt movements. When you finally get the car sideways, don't freak out and try to steer out of it. Let the car slide and learn how it reacts, then work on controlling it with fluid, smooth movements.

And yeah, don't do this on any public or otherwise populated street.

i drive around all winter on backroads with my Handbrake handle in my hand its hours of fun especially when you get used to it and get the knack! amazing the control you have! im glad i have an auto when im doing that caz it just makes it a bit easier and trust me when you are sliding around a loong corner you dont wanna have to take your hand off that handle! you have to be regulating that thing constantly to stay in control and pavement is a whole new deal... i thought i was pretty slick doin it all winter... untill i tried it on dry pavement and ended up spinning out and stopping facing the wrong direction! but always practice where nothing and no one can get hurt..
ps gravel is fun too.. watch for potholes my buddy lost a third of his wheel to a pothole..

OMG, handbreak is so awesome, didnt think it was possible to have so much fun in a FWD car on soo many surfaces...without damaging it or putting heaps of stress on anything, the thing just slides around everywhere.. lotsa my mates think im crazy but they dont understand the amount of control u have over the car if u do it right, thanks guys for all the help/encouragement and of coarse.. mothering..i have been a good lil boy and only do it in vacant open areas. GOD DAMN ITS FUN.

Pitty ill be out of action for a while, my car has some un-drift related damage to the front and rear.. refer to my other thread for more details
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=97360
if thats crossthreading or whateva..pm me and ill ditch it, its in intenational forums > australia > my cars broken

Again, thanks alot guys, this forum is so awesome.

Just one more thing.. a mate has a civic hatch..its auto, i was worried about encouraging him to pull it (the handbreak that is.. ) because i wasnt sure about the impact on an auto. Is it ok to have a pull in an auto
