alcohol injection?

methanol? ethanol? It definitely sounds like a great bang-for-the-buck mod, but what the hell do you put in the tank, and how much does it cost? Do you get it from auto-zone, or the ABC store?

I've searched and searched, but all I can find is debates about HOW it works, not what you're supposed to use.

You can use rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol from home depot, methanol or even winsheild washer fluid - main trick - use the same stuff you get tuned on all the time as the tune varies with the exact fuel you inject

It seems methanol will give you the most power out of any other substance, however, finding 100% methanol may be difficult. My local shop sells it by the gallon for about $4.00 or so per gallon.

Not to be off-topic or hijack the thread, but please respond to your PMs Al concerning the alky kit I purchased last Tuesday.

I don't have the kit but I do know a little about organic solvents

In order of ideal heat of vaporization, vapor pressure, and higher flash point it is this order: Methanol>Ethanol>Isopropanol.

So I would guess methanol is best i.e., coolest evaporation and highest knock suppression, however the cheapest to obtain would Ethanol (denatured - not pure but close) $9/gal at Lowes. Isopropyl is found anywhere cheap for $1.79/32oz but is only 70% and some places 90%
  1. Methanol [wood alcohol, methyl alcohol, Heet (at auto stores), Conc. window cleaner (%50)]
  2. Ethanol (Denatured, EtOH, Ethyl alcohol, everclear, Grain) - Denatured is the only economical feasable one.
  3. Isopropanol (rubbing alcohol - 70%, isopropyl alcohol, 2-propanol, Isoheet (advance auto)
Warning: methanol can kill you, so if you have kids don't leave it laying around, and use gloves. It is also the least polar of the 3 alcohols, so 100% might be tough on the plastic fittings, I don't know, concentrated window cleaner (the right one) at 50% is prob OK.

If I had an alcohol kit, I would buy me a 50 gal drum of 100% Isopropanol from a chemical supply store for about $200 and get it tuned for that stuff. It would be H2O free, pure, the easiest on the kit, the safest, and won't ruin your paint finish. But only do this if your a law abiding citizen for a purchace like that may put you under DEA survailence.

Note: Denatured alcohol is poisonous too, it's comprised mostly of ethyl alcohol but has some methanol and other crap the wakko left govt put in there for liquor tax reasons and to deter consumption.
