My hunch is that these types of devices simply intercept the injector signal and add 30% to the IDC. Prolly works just fine on the average mom and pop car that has sufficient fuel trim built into the ECU for any fine tuning needed.

However, I doubt this type of device has the level of sophistication that we EVO owners demand.

IMO, if you wish to go with E-85, get a real E-85 tune. We are so fortunate that we can actually do this. For a lot of car owners their only option is MyE85kit dot com.

1) Is it giving 30% more fuel? (would this max out the stock evo injectors) or 2) simply increasing the amount of injector "on time" (thereby not maxing out the capability of the stock injector, but just sending a second smaller pulse)?

I think it's the latter? Anyone?

It doesn't make sense for us, when we have a free program (EcuFlash) that can adjust the injector scaling, and 3rd party ROMs (Tephra) that allow map switching.

This product works the only way physically possible, which is just increase injector open time, ie, higher duty cycle. If you're already over 70% duty cycle on gasoline, you can't use E85 without upgrading your injectors, not even with this product. This product doesn't miraculously make your injectors flow more CC/min.

I always thought that IDC - Injector Duty Cycle - is the on time. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but I thought 100% IDC means, basically, full flow, or max flow. So, if a generic motor normally runs at, say, 65% IDC and the E-85 black box increases that by 30%, to, say, 85% IDC, then the motor should run OK on E-85. Perhaps not at max output, but it should run just fine.

It's not for me though. I would want, and would advise anyone else to get, an E-85 tune for our EVO's.

Don't buy it. Its a waste of money and will probably destroy your motor if you try to use it.
