Register as E-85 vehicle?

Sorry if this has been covered but I couldn't find anything on a search.
Has anyone tried to get their evo registered as a FlexFuel vehicle?
In Az I believe you can drive in the HOV lane in a FlexFuel vehicle

Per the EPA, it is illegal to convert a gas car to a E85 car. So, no you cannot do it.

Not quite right; it's illegal to do so without an EPA-certified flex-fuel conversion. So, the way we convert to E-85 is illegal, but it's not illegal in the general sense.

More information from the EPA website: http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/fuel...s/altfuels.htm

I always get a little nervous when I fill up close to my house as it seems to be where ther local PD congregates before going on their shift. Then I remember its not illegal to run E-85....

Yeah I thought I read something about that around a year ago. I guess they don't want people to convert their cars to be eco friendly...

They want people to convert, but they don't want Joe's Bait, Tackle, and Autoshop doing a hillbilly conversion that ends up being worse than the car was originally.

Sounds like they want companies to do auto manufacturer OEM ish like EPA tests on the kits. So, that sounds like a lot of $$$$ which the smaller companies do not have.

I simply don't see how a bad conversion to E85 could even happen.

I would think that any conversion to E85 would pollute less that on gasoline, and would certainly consume far less gasoline.

For the record, the pollutant differences between E85 and gasoline are nearly moot. However, the argument E85 uses lass gasoline is valid but there is something to said for the massive amounts of cornstock used to create the ethanol. It is a big issue and can hopefully resolved through waste cellulose ethanol production. Ultimately, in terms of a shift to eco friendly and renewable fuels, E85 is only a temporary stepping stone and will never be a nationally viable primary fuel source.

I have been considering the E85 switch but wont do it because of the lack of stations (even here in IL). If you have stations where you drive, I would go for it. The odds of being caught with a modified fuel system are a lot lower then an exhaust or tint ticket. Good luck.

For now at least, E85 is the only viable alternative to gasoline and diesel. I certainly do agree that we need much better and higher production sources than field corn.

Details, please.
Did you inform the tester that your were running E85?
Or did you simply show up for your standard smog test?
Is that a sniffer at idle test, or under load on rolling road type of test?
Did you tweak the tune in any special way?
A mod list would be nice for we **** types.

I had my EGR on and my put my main cat (under the car) back on.
Lancers have a cat on the stock exhaust manifold, I didn't put that back because of the turbo.

I didn't change the tune I had, I lowered my idle a bit since my idle is at 1k.
The smog test here includes both the idle test and load test.

And I never told the tech I was running e85.

I've read evos with cams that have passed also.
Just put your cat back on.
