how much knock is ok?
wow, my car must be uber sensitive to knock because I can get 1* of timing pulled for a single count.
I did have the p0300 reflash though so that might have something to do with it. I'm going to compare my knock sensor filter maps with MalibuJacks posted roms

On my built engine, which had the balance shafts removed, I get consistant "phantom" knock at partial throttle acceleration between 3000 - 4000 RPM. This is pretty much the expected range where a lack of balance shafts would generate the most noise. Knock counts anywhere from a mild 1-1-2-2-1-1 type pattern to something like 3-5-7-10-7-5-3... I've been starting to make very small adjustments to the knock filters in the affected load cells. I'm also occassionally getting one count of phantom knock around 7000 RPM, which is an area that I'm not yet really comfortable adjusting my knock filters for. Hopefully I can make some headway in understanding how the various filters work at the lower RPM.
Also, I have seen pretty much the same behaviour as MalibuJack as far as knock counts go, ie.: "it takes 7 counts to alter the octane number, and over 4 to alter my timing.. 3's don't tend to affect timing unless it occurs 3 samples or more in a row.."

I guess that is why Al has the same high and low maps the same. The knock protection is more aggresive. Also it takes more work to back off the low octane map after the car has been "tooned". After all "time is money" LOL.

From what I read AL advances the timing in the peak torque area to about 8. I do not know if he leans out the peak torque area or not, but if he does do that, then how can he get away with advanced timing AND leaned AFR in that area. Doesn't your car register high levels of KS with this tune?
I know this is kinda off topic, but I would like to see what you have to say.
