#2. #1 warm up. #3 fault. That is our best understanding so far.

FWIW I never noticed any difference in logging speed with both connectors hooked up..

The octane number recovery also seems to have a load component in addition to the timer. I was logging a friend's car and watching the octane number head toward 250 or so as usual with his tune. Then we drove around with light load and waited for it to creep back up to 255 - which it did. Then, we 'knocked' it back down to 250 and got out of the gas again for a while. It didn't come back up at all after a few miles of light driving. Surprisingly, when he got back into the gas hard, it immediately shot up to 254 over a couple of seconds.

We repeated this a few times. Getting completely out of the gas and then loading it pretty heavy (but not to the point of knock) made the octane number recover faster (in fact, immediately) than waiting for the timer. Interesting.

I saw this too, and the code supports the behaviour. The knock control and the octane control are both constrained by limits such as load, RPM, coolant as you say. It won't show knock sum or adjust octane unless there is some load on the motor.

how are the initial octane numbers calculated and stored?

tuned a vehicle the past week where even after a battery reset, its previous octane value (in this case around 74%) was still prevalent. my friend and i speculated that somehow someone erroneously placed in 89oct gas or so, thus the ecu "set" this value intially after a start. Either this or maybe that this value is stored in long term flash memory.

When I unplugged my ECU momentarily, it went back to the initial value that I'd flashed the ROM with. All the ones I've seen default to 255 or 100%.
