going to be tuning a 35R car
going to be tuning a 35R car
A friend want's me to tune his 35R equipped VIII that he just bought. Does anyone have a base timing map for a stroker w/35R? He bought the car with an AEM standalone (car had a 42 in it at one time but the turbo was destroyed).
Anyhow the car was never tuned properly and nobody has been able to get the car to run properly - it hasnt been taken to anyone who knows anything about Evos though. I have a feeling there may be something else wrong with the car but we'll see. I guess there is always the option of tuning the standalone but I have no AEM tuning experience so I'm not sure that would be the best route to begin with.
I told him I would give it a shot if he decides to put the stock ECU back in the car. I'm figuring a conservative 21psi pump gas (93) tune with lower than stock timing.. maybe 4-5* at peak torque to 14-15* at redline, Rescale the map for 300 load colums and determine the injector scaling / latency for his injectors (not sure what it has, probably 1000cc injectors). Anyhow if anyone has a decent basemap to start with I would certainly appreciate it. If not I'll just take it slow and possibly be asking some more questions as I go along. I did some searching and found a few partial screenshots of some 35R timing maps but not a complete map.
If you have a 35R and or Stroker with your own map that you wouldnt mind sharing I would appeciate it.

some friendly advice.....if you really know your tuning well youd know that the timing you listed there is WAY off mark for a 35R, especialy the redline timing. Yout load sites are also too low! try 320.
Even on 100 Octane race gas its a stretch of the immagination ..15 deg...
Take it to a pro tuner and save your friend the sorrow of a lost engine!

I'll pass on the "Pro" tuners, thanks for the advice though

I guess I'm capable as far as tuning goes. I've tuned my own car and a few others and all of us are happy with our knock free tunes that make good power.
Contrary to popular belief EFI tuning really is not some special magic only available to certain people. It's actually a very methodical process that probably anyone could do, providing they do the research and spend the time necessary to get good results, often something some of the "pro" tuners dont bother with.
The great thing about a forum like this or the open source community in general is that people share knowledge. So... back on topic, if you'd like to share some knowledge concerning ballpark timing for a stroker running a 35R I'd be very grateful. I know that there are several users here with that turbo, maybe not the exact combination but just in the ball park is all that I need to get started and if nobody shares I can always go the slow route and figure it out on my own.

I would think you'd be able to run higher boost then 21psi due to the 35r being a much more efficient turbo then the stocker, hence cooler air. I would think 22-23psi would be ok. As for your timing map, this is how I would personally tune the car:
Go real real low, see where the car hits peak boost, adjust in a triangle patern from there.....Have peak boost RPM in a very generic load area be your bottomed out low timing, and gradually raise it as far as it will go until it starts getting knockish....then back it off a bit, and do some pulls.
Right there you'll have a good base map, and you can tweak it as you see fit.

well...
we have a 2.3 with head work 35R etc on 880s (and 1000's sometimes)
my mods are?
custom grind gsc s3's
ams 35R .63
JAM head
JAM 2.3 with balance shafts
buschur modded fuel pump
ams turboback
ported intake mani, tbody
etc etc...
----------------
if you want a map that will get you close, please let me know
we see 350load on pump gas at 23psi...
