IF the valves have hit the pistons what is the worst case for damage?

I am right in saying just replace pistons and valves? or would the head require work?
You will know as soon as you take off the head. If the bowls are messed up the head is probably worthless.

hrmm ok - so I guess we need to take the head off ANYWAYS.

re brakes - yeah in retrospect it probably wasn't the best thing todo, but its VERY hard to overcome the natural (and learnt) tendancy to stomp the brakes

For sure on that. I instruct hpde and even from time to time i wish to hit the brakes instead force myself to do otherwise.

We almost lost an ecu legend. How selfish of me :/

We need you and Mfred to drive in a bubble from now on.

Glad you made it out!

If you are sure the valves have hit the pistons then the very least will be new valves, and if you are lucky the pistons may survive it (but highly unlikely). Next will be the valve guides which may be bent. If the head is off you may as well do the bottom-end and want to check the bearings are OK seeing as how you ended the wrong way up. Most likely they will be OK if the motor was not run too long this way.

I have also seen a turbo completely crap itself when an oil-line came off, even with the engine shut down within a second. So you want want to check it spins freely too, if it wasnt crushed.

All the best with it, it is gut-wrenching thing to see your pride and joy sitting there as a wreck.

I had a timing belt straight up break off my 1G at 70 MPH at WOT on the highway and even with that amount of force, it only bent 4 valves and I was able to reuse the pistons. They had marks from the valves but really not as bad as you'd expect. I got new guides pressed in and some new valves, hot tanked the thing and it was good as new.

The 4G is remarkably resilient. You'd be shocked at how little damage a major failure can cause sometimes. The destroyed timing belt indecent only really cost me about 300.00 including a new belt so it wasn't even cost prohibitive really and I ported the head a bit at the same time.

Honestly, I think if you had even some major mechanical issues with your car, enough people would step up to get you the parts you needed. My concern is the body damage and that repair bill. I honestly, and seriously mean this, think if you can get the body and frame back together, that the rest of the parts would magically appear at your door. Start the "Tephra needs a "Fill in the Blank" thread and you'd be amazed at the generosity of the people on here.

Look at it this way. People spend 200-400 dollars to tune their cars on a regular basis and you have provided alot of this crowd with some serious ECU skills. That alone is probably worth it to most of us. But it also seems like your a pretty decent dude which doesn't hurt. I'm not trying to S your D here, it's just how it is. Oddly, I don't even have the Tephra Mod on my map, never have. But I recognize the input you have made.

Let me know if I can help you out with my offer from before. Get that frame and body back together and keep us up to date on what you need. I'm pretty sure UPS ships to your place.

/brox
