I've just secured a 1g auto awd, and I will be doing this swap in the near future. Kinda nervous about it, but from what I've read it looks like it will be a great improvement upon the dsm ecu.

I've been running this for a couple years now. My friend has been running his for about 1 year less. His is a 1g awd 5 speed and mine is a 1g awd auto. We run everywhere from 93 octane, to 50/50 e85/93 octane, to full e85. My car is a very good foot brake bracket car, the ecu keeps the engine very consistent. I can dial within 10 thousanths even with weather changes.

I hope someone can advise me on this to save me some time:

Using the early metal 1g cam angle sensor, if base timing was setup before with the stock ECU, when the Evo ECU is installed, does the base timing need to be reset again? If it is not reset how much is it off by roughly?

Yes it needs to be set. In evoscan, there is an actuator test that is for setting base timing. Activate it, use a timing light and adjust the sensor to 5* BTDC and you are good to go.

Thanks Jamie. Do you know the answer to this:

If it is was set before, how much is it normally off by when you install the 8 ecu?

Super newb dragging stuff back from the dead here, but I figured I'd mention that the cam CEL is probably due to the fact that the trigger edge is different on the 1G CAS vs. the EVO 8. One is falling edge and the other is rising.

hello guys i followed this thread from the begining and read thru it a few times I finially had the time to make this happend on my 90 eclipse here is a video of the car idiling i do have the check engine light on but for some reason I con not read DTC maybe my evoscan software is corrupted because i also happens with other evos I have tuned I need to look into that .

Anyway I used Tephra usdm rom SD 3bar gm map , i used the maf AIT to send the gm ait signal and the HZ signal to send the map signal to the ECU so far everything is good I still have to connect the tach signal and set base timing on the cas.

Here is a vid..

After a lot of messing around on dsmecu.com, trying to design a CAS wheel that won't throw a code on a USDM rom...we kinda stumbled upon the answer as to why the EDM rom won't pop that cam sensor CEL.

The EDM and USDM versions of the Evo 8 use a different cam reluctor. The waveform for the EDM version seems to be really close to the DSM 2G one, which means that the 1G CAS can be substituted and work just fine. Exactly like a 6-bolt swap in a 2G, using the 1G CAS. The waveform for the USDM reluctor is just a bit too different, which is where the CEL comes from. The USDM waveform is based around two long windows that are exactly the same size, whereas the EDM one is one long window and one shorter one.

So, the EDM rom doesn't hide the CEL, it actually works semi-properly . I can post up the waveforms/link if anyone is interested.

tl;dr = EDM rom + 1G CAS = good.

Great info, thanks for sharing! We'll be releasing our 1G and 2G ECU patch harness' with detailed instructions within a month, hopefully. I will also try to offer preloaded startup files for particular MAF's and such.

Dammit! I just finished making mine, lol.

Glad to help, I am doing this swap on my 4G61T now, and hated not knowing why the USDM rom had a CEL. We stumbled on the answer by accident, a happy one though .

Yeah, stumbled upon it after like 8 pages worth of posts!
An exercise in futility, but I guess we can't be knocked for being thorough.

Great news on the conversion harness. I really don't feel like dealing with pins. The hard part now is sourcing ECUs that work and at reasonable cost.

Just found this out: If you're using the EVO 8 ROM on a 3G eclipse or 02-04 Lancer ECU for the swap (possibly the 05-07 as well, haven't checked), then pin 8 is the fuel pump output, not pin 22 as in the EVO pinouts. I'm doing the swap with a 3G eclipse ECU and just dug up the pinouts to make sure.

HaHaHa...yeah right, and about three days worth of MS Visio drawings that I did in comparison to the waveforms from the technical manual while trying to "Reinvent the wheel"
