What RoadSpike said to some extent. Having been here back then, ECUFlash was very new, EvoScan was very new and most non-pro tuners on the boards hadn't even figured out the basics of how to tune the ECU with the Evo much less applying it to other cars.

Heck if you go back then you'll see a lot of the people that are very good with tuning these cars via ECUFlash now (and have businesses) were asking newb questions right around then.

Early 2007 is when this forum really began to take off and the rest is history.

On topic. To the OP, take your time, read up on a lot of the sticky topics in the forum. Even though the engines/setups are different a lot of the basic approaches should work the same. Hopefully you can find somewhere safe to tune, might be worth checking with some other members that self-tune in your area and find out which roads they use.

ok so i just noticed my car driving weird so i did a couple logs an im gettin up to 36 knock in random loads all around 2500 to 3000 rpm. I had been leaking a little oil from the feed line to the turbo, it is now that i fixed it that this is happening. Ill get the knock on one run then do another with out idk i tryed adding fuel but didnt help so i retarded the timing but with very minimaL affect, i pulled 10 deg an only reduced the knock to 30ish from 36 with more fuel.

I just went over my timing maps and have made them with as small as possible jumps between cells, the most is a 3 jump but mostly 1&2 above 90 load

I wouldn't be surprised if your engine is noisier in that area than the 4G63 Evo engine and the knock sensor is possibly over sensative in the low areas. We need to raise the noise threshold our our engines once we perform certain upgrades since the exhaust/valvetrain get noisier than stock and cause a LOT of phantom knock in that area as well. The first thing to do is confirm its phantom knock though.

OK so heres my refined map with better transition. I havnt tryed it yet will be doing so shorty. Its close to my old map where i was getting 36 knock anywhere from 50-100 load at 2500 an 3000 cells just better transition. also i found that where the knock was happening the ecu was pulling timing like crazy, but heres the weird part i could hit the same cell an the first time it wouldnt pull any timing an i wouldnt have knock but then it would pull timing which i think is causing the knock. Same exact cells, same afr, same conditions.

Perhaps that odd pull timing bit when in open loop and rpms under 3000 like on bit 11 of the FAA periphery? Or was it bit 10? The evoecu wiki has it defined for the FAA periphery which bit to turn off.

Btw did you log engine temp to see if the car is going into cold start retard thanks to a bugged sensor?

my colant temps are 190-210, normal driving 193-196, after a couple hard pulls it will spike at 210 an come right back to 193-196. So all this BS is or could be from open loop?

I put the car back to normal closed loop settings and no luck the knock is still there. i did a log where i had 3 knock @ 2500rpm 80load 24deg timing, then the ecu pulled timing to 7deg and i had 36 knock WTF? how do i stop the ecu from pulling the timing behond what i have it set for as this seems to be causing the knock.

again the knock is always in the 2500 or 3000 cells between 40-90 loads. the ecu will just pull timing 15+ deg an knock up to 36 counts
