I give up...

I've been playing with the tune in my car now for about 2 weeks after work almost every day. I can NOT get this thing dialed in.

My mods are: Stock ECU Speed density - BR 2.1L 10:1 engine, BR balance shaft delete, GSC S2 cams, ST dual springs/retainers, ST valves, ST bronze valve guides, Top Line lifters, Kiggly HLA, BR cast HTA3582R kit, PTE 1200cc injectors, Walbro 400 fuel pump, OMNI 4-Bar, GM AIT, Spoolin harness, STM EGR delete, Exedy Triple Disk.

Tuned on 93 oct...

It seems no matter what I get my timing dialed in at, I can't get my car to not knock... My Air/Fuels are in check, and I can't get my car past 22psi and 4* timing at high RPM without the car sporatically knocking.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Posting your logs along with fuel and timing maps will help greatly in getting you some help

This is where I was at when running 28psi.. I don't have any logs for this tune right now. I can tell you, I would typically hit load cells 240-260 at peak torque (4500-4700RPMs), and then climb to 280-300 load as approaching redline.

Those logs don't have any significant knock sum! What was the average knock count in other logs? With such many mods, I highly suggest that you use detcans when tuning this car. If you keep pulling timing but knock counts persist then it's likely phantom knock.

Hey Fox,

I borrowed a home-made set of det-cans from a friend tonight. Either my car isn't knocking, or I just don't have the ear to hear the knock... Nothing sounds different when it's knocking (that I can hear). But of course, hearing anything is hard with my loud exhaust and external dump!

So, after pulling a ton of timing out of most of the map, I ended up with a fairly reliable tune, but it still picks up a 1-2 knock counts here and there, and if I run it through multiple gears, it eventually keeps retarding timing to the point where it does knock.

The other down side to this tune is, it's not making nearly the power I would think it should be making, and it's super slow in 5th gear at WOT (though this may be normal for a 35R, I don't know).

Get rid of your exhaust manifold. It's the weak point in your setup. Move some of the RPM points into the high RPM area of your map.

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean: "Move some of the RPM points into the high RPM area of your map". Are you saying re-scale my map so that I have more resolution at higher RPM?

Also, I agree on the exhaust manifold, but should that be enough to hold me back this much? The car feels ok, but not nearly as fast as I expected it to be. Can't seem to get any timing in it up top.

Are you sure that the base timing is correct. How long have you been on the new setup?

I did not see any WOT pulls. It seemed like you were rolling on to the throttle and never made it past 75% throttle.

It also looked like you are running to lean, especially for 93 oct. Log a third gear pull at WOT and post it up. That will help see where you are at. Keep that knock light on in case things get hairy so you know to let off is necessary.

Yeah, I mean rescale the RPM points. Yes, that manifold is bad.

This last log file seems fine, use the detcans during wots, if knock is not real then attempt to add some timing. Phantom knock is common in evos with aftermarket valve springs/retainers, in such case & after examining it with detcans you'd simply adjust knock filter.
btw, AFR is perfectly fine in the log file.

Hi mt057,

Please see my post (#7 in this thread). There's a 3rd gear pull in the zip file along with the tune I left off at last night. Also, this is an entirely new setup - started from scratch on SD and turbo setup. My old tune was no good, so I didn't re-use any of it.

Hey Fox,

I may have to try building another set of detcans or something... I tried real hard to use my buddy's set, and I just can't hear anything abnormal. This of course may just be a good thing! But I also don't know what detonation in my engine would sound like. I think I will try to find some vidoes online and try again tonight.

Damn for some reason I did not catch that one lol. I was quite tired. I looked at the files a few times last night and did not notice the third gear pull.

I stand corrected, the afr loods good but you are right that is some serious low timing for the setup.

It seems to me like you are off a tooth or something possibly. That would make you be off by about 4* and put you at about the same timing up top I was able to run on pump with my HTA 3582.
