Unknown Rom on Newly purchased '03 Evo 8

So I just purchased an 03 Evo 8 with a bunch of bolt ons and I believe some internal work done to it. I am pretty sure that it was tuned at some point with ECU Flash, so I ordered the Tactrix 1.3U cable to use along with the 9 pin serial cable already installed. I have ecuflash along with evoscan ready to go on my laptop, but am pretty unfamiliar with these new programs. I havent tuned any 4g63 engines since I owned a 95 eagle talon tsi back in 2000.running dsmlink. When I recieve the cable to download the rom, could someone possibly assist me in figuring out where to start making adjustments on this thing?

Once you receive the Tactrix 1.3U cable and establish a connection with your Evo 8's ECU using ECUFlash, you'll be able to download and analyze the ROM. It's essential to make a backup of the original ROM before making any modifications, so you have a safe point to revert to if needed.

Understanding the specific modifications and internal work done to your car is crucial. This knowledge will guide you in making informed adjustments. Consider reaching out to the previous owner, if possible, to gather information about the parts and modifications installed. It's also helpful to research the specific components and their optimal tuning parameters.

To begin making adjustments, it's advisable to start with basic parameters such as fuel and ignition timing. However, it's important to note that each engine setup is unique, and adjustments should be made incrementally while monitoring performance using data logging tools like EvoScan. Always exercise caution and avoid making drastic changes without proper knowledge and monitoring.

Additionally, familiarize yourself with the concepts of air/fuel ratios, boost levels, and engine knock, as these factors play a significant role in tuning performance. Consider consulting resources like tuning guides, forums, or even seeking professional assistance from experienced tuners who specialize in Mitsubishi Evos.

Remember, tuning can have a significant impact on your car's reliability and drivability, so take your time, gather knowledge, and proceed with caution.

appreciate the info buddy. I have the cable and downloaded the current rom. It seems to have been "tuned already," but the car had alot of hands in it, so I found a used engine harness to go over and then swap it out. I was having an issue with 1 and 4 cylinders not firing, so I checked the pins at the ecu and found a few wires that were just cut (no idea why people cut harness's so close to connectors) but the new harness should be here today. It really sucks not being the owner that installed half these mods because I know my work is done properly, plus I know what is installed. I plan to yank the engine out and go through it this winter to freshen up or build it either way. I just wanted to drive it for a few months before that since its been 20+ years since I drove a 4g63 powered vehicle. Lol. Im even going as far as replacing the aem afr uego to verify wiring is correct, because the gauge has a burn mark on the connector on the back.........kinda irritating, but my kids will at least get to learn how to build a car properly, instead of rigging stuff up, even if it is your daily driver.

"It sounds like you're dealing with a similar issue to what I recently experienced. In my case, rats had chewed my spark plug wires, which caused only two of my plugs to fire. To resolve the issue, I had to purchase a new harness.

Unfortunately, the installation was a bit tricky as the wire colors didn't match up. This could have been because the harness I bought was supposed to be for an MR, but it might have been for a GSR.

Despite the confusion, we managed to install it and get everything running fine again. So, it's worth looking into your spark plug wires and considering if the harness might be the problem. I hope this helps!"

ECU unlocker may be what you need. Tuners used to scramble the ROM ID to prevent people from sharing their work.

ECU Unlocker would allow to correct the ROM ID and read or adjust the ECU. I imagine it is still out there on the WEB. I think I have a copy of it.
