mandatory re tune with transmission swap?

so im about to throw a 5 speed in my MR and one of my friends seems to think that if i dont get retuned after placing the new transmission in, that im gonna end up destroying my car. hes trying to tell me that my ecu is gonna have no idea whats going on and that the car is going to basically reject the transmission...IM FULLY AWARE THAT THIS IS RIDICULOUS, im posting this to try and prove a point that a retune isnt necessarily required, but may be beneficial. any input or information on how the trans will actually effect the car tuned as is?

I did the swap and you have noting to worry about. We only have one map thats used for all the gears so the car wont notice a gear went missing

No tune required. On a side note you should find new friends

Hahaha. That's a good friend. He's just concerned, but doesn't know much about the Evo.

If you're using gear based boost and going from a 6 to a 5 speed, you will need to make some adjustments.

This. You'll have to change the table that has the speed vs rpm so the ecu can calculate which gear you're in, and obviously the boost control table. Bit that's only if you're using tephra's gear based boost..

I had to get a tune for my trans due to the gears being different. So i would recommend speaking to your tuner. He did the tune for free but he did the install. He took less then a hour on the dyno and 3 pulls. hope that helps.

I can't see why you would need a tune. Evo MR's don't have a different tune from GSR's,,,,

I'm sure it has to do with gear ratios and with the way boost comes in.
