From the rally side of things, I can tell you unless its a homologated rally cage with FIA papers, chromoly isn't legal. The rally guys supposedly don't like chromoly because it is a harder material to weld correctly. Done wrong, chromoly can be more brittle than DOM.

From a rally cage perspective, the T45 chromoly cages for the Evo weigh in right around 100 lbs, whereas the regular steel ones are closer to 150ish lbs. As Dave eluded to above, the real weight savings comes from the fact that some groups rules allow for thinner walled tubing when chromoly is used. DOM tubes must be 1.75x0.095" whereas chromoly is a tad smaller (something metric) and 0.083".

Moly cages have to be TIG welded. Mild steel DOM cages can be MIG welded...

chromoly should be heat treated after welding. (most people do not) The consequence is a reductin of material property (imo... not very significant) The Moly cage should be backpurged if TIG'd

Chromoly typically isn't allowed in racing series where a multiple impact accident can occur.

Multiple roll overs, car to car impact, etc.

NHRA has some funny rules in all reality as they pretty much assume that the tubing is in an annealed state after welding and is roughly 40% stronger than 1020 mild steel. That is all fine and dandy...unless the HAZ is fully hardened and has a ductility of a few percent...

My point was if you take a foot of both tubing types in the same wall thickness the weight is the same.

Are you interested in selling the rear transmission mount? I'd be interested in one. It is 1.16 pounds lighter and looks good too.
