Viper alarm, did I get ripped off?
OK, so I just bought:
Viper 5000 2-Way Alarm
Optional Tilt Sensor
Optional Glass-Break Microphone
Optional Backup Battery
Total cost, installed: $594.
They hit me $250 for the alarm, $50 for tilt, $30 for glass-break, $50 for battery, and $200 for installation labor... plus 5% Mass. Sales Tax
I was expecting under $500 because I've seen people get just the alarm for $300 installed. Thanks in advance

It depends on the qulity of labor. Most shops do the quickest possible install so your remote works and the next car can be put in the install bay. Most alarm installs are visible just by peeking under the steering column and the wiring of the alarm makes it easier to hot wire the car. Then you see 3M T-taps and other poor connectors used for time savings. If they did a professional job than its worth it.
If you look under the steering column and cant see the brain of the system or you have extreme difficulty discerning the alarm wiring from your ignition wiring, the install was probably worth it.
Yeah got ripped off, not just by cost, but because Viper alarms suck! Seriously everybody I know was tellin' me not to go with the Viper alarm, and I had to be hard headed and still go with the Viper alarm, and guess what it stopped working after only having it for a month. Got it fixed, and it was working for another month, and once again, stop workin'. So I was just like f*ck it!!! And was just going alarmless for awhile. My aunt who I was very close with bought it for me as a B-day gift. The weird thing is she died like a couple weeks ago, and it started working again just out of nowhere at her funeral. Thank you Auntie and I love you.
Still with that said, Viper alarms suck!

Sorry, you're all wet on saying DEI alarms suck.

Installation error is usually the only reason that Viper/Clifford/Python/Dei products fail. Its proven. Either that or someone dropped the two-way remote or the battery died.
DEI is still electronics made in China with the same expected defect rate as other products. There are product failures but 90% are installer error. Audiovox still offers their own security division and they also own Code Alarm and Crimestopper, JTI and Compustar are still plugging away, everything else is pretty much DEI though.
the price is very subjective. if the installer is seasoned then he or she would charge 500 and up for just installs of basic alarm and starter. if the installer is new with little experience then he or she might do it for less then 400.00. you can kinda tell by the way they wire stuff up and try to make it look clean. also if the system works after a year is another good sign. i had an install and it sucked. it stopped working after a month and i had to go back about 4 times after that to get it fixed over a 2 year duration. now i got ripped off!
Critics of DEI ... give it a rest ... DEI makes good products if installed properly.
ShamelessCookie:
That's about what you can expect to pay for a good install.
Local shops in my area are priced +/- $100
If they did a good job enjoy your alarm and be happy.
