Yes Yes I know. Your all going to tell me to find some other aftermarket subwoofer because it will probably be cheaper and sound louder. After all the searching I did, those are the only comments I heard. However, thats not what I want. I have heard the factory sub and I like it, plus that is all I want anyway.

The dealer gave me a good deal on the sub that comes with the brackets to connect to the car (about $105). However they said that the stock amplifier and wiring would cost me around $600. He says that I should just go with an aftermarket amp and that should do the trick.

What amplifier do you recommend for this sub?

Does a non SSL evo have the holes under the carpet for the subwoofer bracket to hook into?

Will my stock headunit work fine with this sub?

Like I said, if anyone has done this, please share with us how you did it. I know for sure that there are other people that want to do the same thing. It would make a good sticky in the evo-how-to forum.

This will be going in a 2005 Evo GSR.

you have to use a small amp 100 watts or less on the stocker, otherwise it will blow up.. get an aftermarket sub and put it in there.. i dont think the holes are there, why not just look. they use plastic holders that have screws to hold the sub box in.. like sheet rock hangers.. youll prob need just regular screws and make your own holes..

also the stock radio doesnt have rca cables.. you need a new head unit, wise choice, or youll need rca convertors for the rear speaker wires.. youll need 2. any audio store has them, but its an old way of doing it and youll loose sound quaility..

so here is what you need, 500 dollars, get a decent amp, a newer sub, and a headunit. if you want it sound good. or go the cheap route i mentioned above..

dont get me wrong the stocker sounds decent, but i did try a amp on it, it didnt last long, i bought a new sub, much better.

If I still want to do this. Would it be easier if I got the stock headunit from someone as well?

You want the whole SSL 'sound' package. The sub is something like 6 ohms or something crazy.

If you had to ask this question, it will be hard for me to explain it to you. Basically you will need to match it correctly and the correct match is the factory amp.

Yes, you can just get someone's fullstock setup and it is plug-n-play.

Sorry about the other post, I wasn't trying to sound cold or mean or anything, it's just that they are made to work together.

Ok, I went to that link and pmed the guy. If I got just the sub and the amplifier that comes with it, would a shop be able to wire those things together to get them to work and sound like they should. Is the stock SSL head-unit also needed?

How much should I offer him for these things to make it worthwhile for me to do this?

I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure you'll need an SSL head unit too. You really would be better off, moneywise, effortwise, and sound qualitywise to go full aftermarket. It'll be a lot of work to source all the stuff you need, and to get it into the car just for a stock system. I'm also pretty sure that the SSL speakers are upgraded from the normal evo speakers.

You might be able to find someone with a totalled SSL evo to pull all the wiring and everything for you.

Ok in that case, what is a similar setup to the stock ssl stereo?

I do want to keep the stock headunit though. I don't want to replace that.

If you don't really care about sound quality and you have an ipod, one of the alpine ipod headunits are great. I used to hate listening to mp3s/ipod, but the convenience of those headunits makes it extremely hard to go back to cds just for sound quality in a pretty loud car. besides that a decent 4 channel amp with the 2 front channels running a set of good coaxes or components and the other 2 bridged to a 10" should be right up your alley if you like the ssl sub. You could run the rears off the head unit if you want. I personally don't run rear speakers, but to each his own. As long as you get at least 200 watts to an appropriately sized 10 or 12 you should be happy.
