Concept of an Auto Evo8
Concept of an Auto Evo8
I orginally posted this on another forum but it was mentioned I should put this here also...
As I have been learning more and more about drag its not always about how fast your car is or how well your reaction time is...etc It all depends on your consistancy. I know personally several supra owners that have converted there manuals to auto just for the sake of consistancy. They use there mk4's primarily for drag though all are street legal After seeing some of the very very impressive runs at the evo/sti shootout it downed on me that maybe the evo would have the same luck. Many of you know that missing a shift can and usually will be something like calling AAA for a flat bed right?
What if there was an auto awd trans that bolts directly to the evo's 4g63 and mates with the driveshaft??? There is... while researching a new clutch for my galant vr4 (97 not the older ones) I found out I would be able to replace my trans/clutch/rear diff with parts form the evo in the event of doing major damage vs importing a trans. That means for you evo guys/girls that a auto trans from my very same car would be available. Im sure this would not appeal to most persons with an evo just for the simple fact of once again owning a slush box...hell I agree totally BUT when it comes to consistancy your not beating a computer controlled element.
Oh yea I do have a spare auto trans incase anyone wants to check it out...

Yep.. Though I don't know of anyone who has built components for these automatics (or even the earlier eclipse AWD setups) that can hold up to the abuse, plus you would need a custom high stall torque converter, which can cost over $2000 alone..
ANYTHING can be done.. and I'll be it will be at some point.. I have a friend who needs to drive with hand controls and cannot drive a manual transmission, and he has been wanting an Evo.. so I had dome some trivial research on it to see what was possible... I honestly didn't get too far except to get some basic info on the Evolution GT-A

Jack, the transmission is totally different from the DSM eclipses..
In stock form, the transmission (based on info from HKS Kansai and HKS Fujimura) can handle loads up to 400+hp..
Depending on what you want to do, the stockers are already quite high stall (3000rpms with 1bar boost braketorqued)..
I'm not so worried about the planetaries than the valvebodies.. once the torque converters and the valvabodies are done up, it should be able to handle itself pretty well ..
my torque converter is a custom restalled unit by IPT .. and it's working pretty well with a larger GT turbo .. very consistent 0-60 in the low 4s

Evo 7 GT-A's are slushboxes.
