Unhappy Help - OEM oil filter leaking at seal??

Hey all,

I changed my oil yesterday, put on a oem mitsu filter and filled up with 10W30 Mobil1 and now it seems to have a small leak at the seal of the filter where it touches the block. It hasn't dripped down, but when I run my finger or a paper towel around the seal it always seems to have oil on it. I used the oil filter tool to tighten it up. I kept a paper bag under it all night and nothing was on it in the morning. Is it possible I tightened it to much? Would that cause it to leak? I don't have a tourqe wrench. I was able to to loosen it and re-tighten it with no problem. I have read some ppl couldn't even get there filter off because they were put on with an impact. Could it be to loose? I was able to remove the last filter by hand and it didnt leak. Any ideas??

Thanks!!

gees...dont ever put on an oil filter with an impact gun!! make sure you havnt damaged the metal where the gasket touches the block....also, wet the gasket with oil so as not to ripp or tear when spinning on an oil filter

If anything, try putting another filter on again (im paranoid sometimes so i would go ahead and buy one, wet the gasket and turn it 1/4 of a turn when your hand cant tighten it no more......oh and check the metal to see if its ok )

I didnt put the filter on with an impact gun, I read some shops have and ppl couldn't get them off. I coated it with oil and hand turned it on and then tightened it with the oil filter tool and a 3/8 ratchet. The metal is fine, I would never use an impact gun.

I think instructions call for an extra 1/4 turn after hand tight. When you removed the old filter did the rubber gasket come off with it?

Just pulled the old filter from the trash. The rubber gasket is still attached to it. Thanks for the idea though!!

Well after I had backed the filter off and tightened it back up, it doesn't seems to be leaking anymore. When all night fine and this morning i let it idle for 10 minutes then drove it around and it's still good!
