Some evos' are stronger??

As most tuners have noticed, some evolutions are knock happy and others are not. Some have stronger engines than others(more HP/TQ stock and w/mods). If you have an evo that tends to knock more and gets less HP with various mods, is there anything you can do to remedy this problem(obviously utilizing better gas is an answer...other than that)? Polish heads...Port? Do you trade in an 03 for a later model and mod that car? Any thoughts?

What a wonderful ECU we have in our cars, it's pulling timing like Hell on his car. The sad thing is the car would run harder with less boost and more timing.

If you have a motor that resonates more than avg or a sensitive knock sensor, you can wrap the threads of the sensor with teflon tape. That will help nullify some of the non-detonation resonance. I haven't done it yet, but I plan to. I have done it on other cars. It will still pick up detonation (it's purpose) since that is much louder of a knock. It's like Dynamat for your sensor!

i guess i got lucky

mine still stock internals except cams------itsa strong MFer---i run 31.5psi--gt35r
on c16 ---19deg timing at the top---if you do it right itll hold it..no head studs

im interested in just how much itll hold before it gives up the ghost, i know im pushing it pretty hard but thats what i do----im sure im severely shortening the life of the engine but its ok ....

im adding a magnus manifold and throttle body and going to add a 50 shot on the bottom...ill be going back to 25 psi and working my way back up slowly
i know i know ----the nitrous is gonna blow it up------not if its done correctly
but its not a question of is it gonna blow up-----its when
im prepared to pay the price

So what do you guys think... will a port/polish help? The idea of wrapping the knock sensor in teflon tape is an interesting fix.

A side note, I have a test pipe/tanabe dp/greddy ti. When I replaced the rear O2 sensor it did not throw a cel, and ran great. Now it is throwing a cel and sometimes, when cold, it hesitates or sputters a bit in low gears..nothing horrible, just a bit of an annoyance. Could this be the cel...i thought this code was just an annoying light, not related to performance. I was running w/out a rear O2 sensor for a while and had the same hesitation/cel...replaced it an it was gone...however the cel was only off for 200 miles or so, so maybe it was just coincidence that the hesitation was gone.

well you could get some cams. longer duration cams will lower your dynamic compression, and help alleviate some of your detonation problems. you could also try some colder plugs. if you're serious you could have your combustion chambers polished.
