difficult to get into 3rd gear!

04 GSR. My car has only about 600 miles on it, bone stock. Going into third gear felt "clunky" and not smooth....and now at high rpm shifts, it sometimes even gets stuck and won't go into gear unless I depress the clutch again. I have never launched the car or shifted hard or even at high RPMs until I passed 550 miles. What the heck is the deal? Is there anyone else w/ this problem? I just saw a thread where 2-3 synchro can be replaced for free through technical bulletin...just wanted to see how many others are having synchro/gear issues.

i know of a "silent" recall of the 5th gear syncros, maybe by now there is one for the 3rd gear, did you buy the car with any miles on it? maybe it was a hard demo car. good luck

I have the same problem in my RS. I bought the car with 9 miles on it. It will grind if you shift too slow and it will grind if you shift too fast. It's hard to find the sweet spot so the synchros can keep up. I've learned to live with it but Mitsu better fix anything that breaks as a result.

Yes, the shady fools at south coast mitsubishi told me it had no miles so I couldn't test drive , when I got in the car it already had 105 miles on it! Ive seen the recall for the 2nd to 3rd synchro just a couple of minutes ago. But earlier today I took it in and the tech said he didn't feel anything. But I am sure 3rd gear is messed up, so I will take it back soon.

You only have 600 miles you need to take it easy on the car for another 1000 miles. I had similar issues when I had those miles but now I have about 1400 and it shifts smooth. Your going to have to be patient and let it break in properly.

Have you tried using a different gear oil or adjusting the clutch?

My evo is going in Monday for 3rd gear grind. I've been having it since day one, I just never had the time to take off work and go without the car for a week. I'll let you know how it goes.

I test drove a 03' GSR that had a hard time going into third on almost every attempt. I thought maybe the clutch wasn't going in all the way but it was. I told the dealership what was wrong with it, and there was no way I would buy it. They said it could be fixed and offered to do backflips for me (I just laughed )... the car had around 200 miles on it. My 04' feels nothing like that.

Do this, press the clutch to the floor and as slow as you can, shift the car into third gear. Mine will grind every time. I have to shift just right and I'm pissed because I didn't buy a car that I would have to shift just right. I bought a car that should be able to take pretty much anything you can throw at it.

I didnt know that you had to drive 1400 miles for a transmission to break in properly ....by no means am I even shifting hard...even regular shifting it is notchy or won't go in. I really hope that it does go away after a while like it did for you, but from what I am reading, it seems like many people have this problem even after thousands of miles.

I've had this problem with mine since day 1. Replaced tranny fluid with syncromesh, still have the problem. It hasn't gotten any worse, and the techs "can't feel anything", so I figure if anything breaks they fix...and it's been documented in my file that I mentioned this prior to my first oil change. Anyway, I now have over 10K miles, and it's no better, but no worse...good luck with finding a solution.

I have to laugh when I read posts about buttery smooth shifts. With a streatchy cable linkage system this is not going to be the case. I had nothing but grief with the 5spd. in my 3g Eclipse and the Evo, though better, is far from perfect. To be fair, you do need to let the tran.s parts have a chance to mate properly and this may take time.

I had the 5th syncro done in my Evo at 11,000 miles. It now works fine, however, the first gear syncro is flakey. Sometimes it works fine other times it feels and acts like a crash box. Penz Synchromesh is a nice bandaide type fix, it will help. Some owners have no problems with their tranny but I have spoken to seveal independant trans shops who tell me that Mitsu's are in often.

Make sure you have your visits documented and do not let the tech test your car, you do it. Let the tech watch. Trust me on this, as a former service manager my techs could fail to see that the Titanic was sinking. The tech that I showed my 3Gs problem to had the gaul to tell me that it could not be fixed because a gear grind was normal. I told the service manager and he told me he had to go by what his "factory trained tech" said. A quick trip by me to the general manager's office put things back in motion. I have not had any service issues since that were not addressed to my satisfaction.

You paid around 30k for your car. You can expect it to work.

Try replacing the tranny fluids with Redline or Royal Purple Fluids and see if it helps. I use to have a grind in 4th when I shift at high RPMs but after I put some RedLine MT90 in it, it just went away.
