I prefer two to the chest, one to the head. The head shot is a luxury you can take once you've stopped them in their tracks...

Back on topic... as far as I know you really should replace the valve guides otherwise how can you be sure the valve guide bore is concentric to the valve seat?

The valves should have no bearing on what guide you can use. The guides need to be checked though to see if they are within spec. That will tell you if they need replaced.
